While existing awards are mearly listed (since information concerning them is easily obtainable from many other sources), alterations or embellishments to their insignia are fully described. Over 150 ribbons are shown in full colour, while 95 photographs and several line drawings illustrate many of the medals, ect.

About the Author
Alec A. Purves, who died in 1992, was a well-known lecturer and writer on orders and medals. He was a Fellow of the Royal Numismati Society and founder-member and Past President of the Orders & Medals Research Society. He served as a Territorial in the London Scottish in the early 1930s, and in the Intelligence Corps in the Second World War.
