Crazy leakage problems... spotty customer service,
By
This review is from: Medela Breastmilk Feeding and Storage Set (Baby Product)
We used Medela bottles and nursing products exclusively when our daughter was born 6 months ago because I was using the Pump 'n Style and had purchased all Medela to go along with the pump. We were happy until a mere 2-3 weeks after using it. A few bottles began leaking. My husband and I tried to figure out what we could be doing wrong... we sterilized according to package instructions using the Medela microwave bags. After struggling with the leaks for another 2 weeks (and a newborn), we called Medela. The rep apologized and said that they were having problems with the old plastic collar/rings (that screw onto the bottles with the nipples) and would gladly ship to us updated, newer collars. Sure enough, we were impressed to receive them in the mail within a few days. Did they solve the problem? Not really. Some leaked less. But others sprung new leaks. We struggled with the bottles for another few months. We had invested too much money to switch. And the baby liked the nipples. By 4 months of use, practically all the bottles and collars were leaking. In addition, we had 3 Medela bottles warp... yes, warp... in the microwave, again, using Medela microwave bags. When I called Medela, I spoke to a rep who was extremely rude... told us it was probably us not screwing on the bottles correctly. When I explained that we tried everything under the sun, she told us that before giving the bottle to the baby, to check that the caps were screwed on just right (not too tight, not too loose), to twist open and run our fingers underneath, along the nipple to make sure everything was flat, check that the threading on the collar lined up with the threading on the bottle... etc. Not only were we already doing all this, but it's a bottle. Who has time to spend 5 minutes fiddling with a bottle with a hungry baby waiting? When I asked if she could send any replacement parts so we could figure out what was going on, she finally relented. A few days later, I came home from work to find a letter stating I had a package waiting for me at the P.O. When I finally went to pick it up, was told I had to pay for shipping before I could have it. It was shipped C.O.D. from Medela! I had them return the package. Went home and threw out all our bottles. We are using Playtex bottles happily now. No more leaks. But, unfortunately, we had already spent a lot of money on Medela bottles and products. As an OB/physician, I no longer recommend Medela products exclusively to my patients. They have good pumps, but their other products are overpriced, in my opinion, and not necessarily high in quality.

really this is going to be your baby's decision. you can try and try but they will eat out of what they want.
That said I think if you have a Medela breast pump these are a great place to start because they come free with the pump. That way you can try out a bottle without investing money in it. If it works great! If it doesn't you haven't wasted any money experimenting. I started with an Adiri bottle because it was pretty and fancy and vented and shaped like a boob and I thought it would be perfect for my baby. He didn't agree. When I broke this one out in desperation (I had it stashed in the closet thinking it couldn't be as good because it wasn't all fancy and vented and blah blah blah) he suddenly started taking the bottle. The lack of venting hasn't been a problem but I'm not convinced that venting isn't just a great advertising gimmick for many people. Tiny babies spit up all the time. My baby spit up after every feeding from the breast for a month and a half. His tummy was just maturing and that is how is body was. I guess if your baby is colicky then by all means try everything you can to help them. But if your baby is just spitty and happy then they are probably just that way. Anyway, my baby likes this bottle so far and we were able to return the Adiri for this set of three (which I bought somewhere else for 17 dollars....). I'm not going to invest in them much more because I'm worried he might change his mind again (he takes bottles no more than once a day so the three I bought plus the two that came with the breast pump meet all our storage/feeding needs).

Convenient and bi-phenol A free,

These are convenient to use because they screw right onto the Medela pump. I have 2 packs of them. My son likes these bottles/ nipples just fine for feeding. Also, I like that the bottles are made from Bisphenol-A free plastic. Overall, I am very pleased - just as I am with all of the other Medela products I have purchased (bottles, pump, wipes, sleeping bra).

These are the New style Wide base nipples and Wide base nipple collars. These WILL fit ANY Midela bottle, Assuming you match the right nipple with the right collar. Only the clear lids fit these bottles.
Bottles work great! any bottle any nipple combination, no leaks!I love them! INFO: before 2009 Medela baby bottles took the "old style" "skinny base" nipples. The nipples with the correct Collar will fit *ANY* Medila bottle. (**** You just have to have to correct collar/ nipple combination****) the yellow lids also only fit the "old style nipples and collars. **If your looking for the old style nipples than this is not what you are looking for. *[I heard] If you have the "old kind and buy new nipples; call Medela and they will send you "new" collars for the wide base nipples free.

Medela, well... they are the name to trust when it comes to products like these. So, assume everything is perfect and here's what little we have to complain about that has happened, so you are prepared:
- sometimes the nipples will tilt and create a little opening where the milk will escape while feeding; prevent this by not applying to much angular pressure - sometimes the seal (possibly on purpose to allow air) of the bottle caps isn't perfect, and a bit of milk can drip out

they are expensive. I use the medela baby bottles, nipples and breast pump. Reliable, bpa-free and haven't had any issues with leakage etc.
BUT if you are on a budget and need more bottles to feed or for your pump, the Ameda brand bottles fit Medela nipples and Medela pump in style breast pump. They are a lot cheaper than Medela and are also BPA-free.

I'm a working mom who pumps to keep exclusively feeding my baby breastmilk. Worried about nipple confusion, I initially bought several types of complicated bottles with lots of parts. It turned out that my baby didn't really prefer any one bottle over the other, and I was stuck pumping into one set of bottles, feeding from another, and washing tons and tons of bottles and parts every night.
Finally, I splurged and bought more Medela bottles for my pump, plus extra nipples, collars, and covers, so I could pump into the same bottles we sent to daycare. Less than half the dishes, no worrying about transferring milk, no more leaks from seating multiple parts incorrectly, and more time to enjoy our evening routine with baby. For working moms, I recommend this product. Don't get too caught up in the "more complicated is better" mentality; for me, it just turned out to be a waste of time and money. Also, if you ended up buying Doc Brown's products, these nipples and lids fit those bottles, and you can pump into those, as well. You just have to leave off the crazy air funnel pieces. Happy pumping!

If all you want is something to pump into and/or store breastmilk in, this won't let you down - but you can get many more bottles for your money going with the 4oz evenflo or gerber bottles, both of which come in BPA free versions. (The colored plastic evenflo are BPA free, not the clear plastic ones) Both brands will screw onto Medela pump hardware and are light enough to do hands-free pumping.

These bottles work well, clean up easily and fit right onto my Medela pump. I also like the caps that fit over the nipple.

Nipple too small for Older Babies but BPA- Free!!!!!!!,
By Cat (Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Medela Breastmilk Feeding and Storage Set (Baby Product)
This product is BPA Free along with all Medela stuff. Thank You Medela! However my only grip is this nipple is too small for my 4 month old. The whole nipple fits in her mouth and she's right up to the plastic yellow rim. So this would be great for newbies but not when older. Born Free is the best BPA Free bottle out there for older babies.
