Last resort... worked like a miracle,

This review is from: Medela ContactTM Nipple Shield 16mm Extra Small - Medela 67251 (Baby Product)
I was determined to breastfeed my son but never imagined how many issues we would encounter. First I got a yeast infection in my nipples which caused excruciating pain so I pumped and bottle fed until that cleared up. Then we discovered that he had a tongue tie that needed to be clipped. I was so hopeful that he would be able to latch correctly after that but he still couldn't stay on and my pain never stopped. I went to the hospital where he was born and saw a lactation consultant who watched him nurse (or try to) and realized that I had a large milk supply and overactive let down, so he was pretty much choking when he tried to suck. That coupled with the fact that he still hadn't 'learned' how to use his tongue correctly yet made it almost impossible. She gave me this shield and he immediately latched on and guzzled!!! We are hoping that he won't need this forever, but in the meantime it has literally saved our breastfeeding relationship. I would recommend seeing a lactation consultant BEFORE using this since they have ways to help without needing a shield and they also tell you how to stop your supply from getting low and how to prevent mastitis etc while using this product.Blessings!

My daughter was small when she was born and we had trouble latching on. The nurse went and got a nipple shield and an hour later she was eating away. I have been using this since she was born almost two months ago and I have yet to notice any decrease in my milk supply. Highly recommend this product if you have trouble latching on. Don't give up it takes time. Also this product is very thin so the baby can still smell your milk and you still feel everything that you would without using one.

Very helpful if you're having trouble with baby latching on and can't get to a lactation consultant right away (It's what they give you anyway when baby can't seem to latch on properly)Since my baby boy was born on July 3rd and the fourth is a holiday, we couldn't get to a lactation consultant when we needed to. Because of this, he lost more than the safe 10% of body weight since he couldn't latch on properly. If I had this when he was born it would have alleviated much of my new-mom stress.

Our baby was having a hard time since birth latching on to the nipple so we had to supplement him with the bottle. We tried a Medela nipple shield from Toys 'R Us but it's the one that is a full circle. It does the job but the silicone gets in the way of our baby's nose restricting his breathing to some extent. The nipple shield is now the only way we can get our baby to breast feed, so I ordered this one to try it out and it works better than the full circle we picked up from Toys 'R Us. This model has a cut out that doesn't get in the way of the baby's breathing.Excellent product and without it our baby would not be able to breastfeed! We highly recommend this for all parents who are having difficulty with latching.

This is the only way I've been able to get my daughter to nurse! Although, it is sort of painful, maybe I need to try a larger size??

I had so many difficulties breast feeding, but after having my second child I was bound and determined not to give up-no matter what. Unfortunately due to cracked and bleeding nipples I almost did. I resorted to pumping for a few weeks to allow myself to heal. When I finally did I used these nipple shields to not only help my daughter latch, but to prevent the soreness breast feeding caused me. She's almost 3 1/2 months old and we're still going strong and I still use a nipple shield at every feeding and plan to for as long as I continue to breast feed. My only suggestion for someone buying this for the first time is to buy just one to make sure it's the right size, and to see if you like it. and if you do, then buy multiples. There have been so many times I was on my hands and knees searching for it while my daughter was crying and hungry. I constantly have to make sure I put it up high somewhere with a 2 1/2 year old in the house. He likes to play with things mommy uses... They're clear and way too easy to misplace! I usually run out to target if I need another one. Luckily I am the size they sell at Target, but if you're not then you'll be SOL for a little while.

Yay!,

Just had a baby five days ago, and the first two days he breastfed beautifully, even though I have an inversion problem. I was so proud. Imagine my dismay when my little champion suddenly stopped being able to latch on once my milk started coming in more fully and I swelled up like a balloon. After a frustrating 24 hours and trying every trick in the book, I decided to break down and buy one of these. What a godsend! He latched on right away. I've read my supply might get low so I've started pumping three times a day between feedings just to be sure (saving the extra milk for those nighttime feedings that daddy can help with). Hopefully we'll be able to wean off the shields eventually, but for now they're keeping us on the breast and from having to pump 8-12 times a day, so I'm relieved!Update: Should've consulted a lactation consultant, apparently this was totally the wrong size (I guess this is the size they use for preemies in the NICU) and may have contributed to a low milk supply problem (though apparently I also have a nodule on my thyroid which may have caused that problem). However, once I bought the right size (27 mm) it was still a godsend, it was my fault and not the company's. I urge you to contact an LC before using, but it's still a great product! And once we decided to stop using it, it only took a few days to completely wean him off the shield with the LC's help!

Worked for NICU baby,

My baby was in NICU for most of the first week of his life. I didn't get to hold him against me and try to breastfeed right away. He was fed by an IV for two days and then had to be bottle fed breast milk for most of his stay. By the time we got around to trying to BF, he would have nothing to do with it. The bottle had proved to be way too easy. After several days of thinking it would never happen, I went out and bought a nipple shield. BAM - After two days of the nipple shield (and following the instructions to take it away after two minutes), he didn't need it anymore and would latch right to my breast. I still use it at night when he's being fussy so that he doesn't wake my husband up. Me and baby love it!

this is a wonderful product, I used it for nursing in the first few weeks. my baby had difficulties latching and this really helped. it also protected raw nipples. I held it in place with a few dabs of lanolin.
