Don't be fooled- I don't know why Medela sends out the 24mm size shield with their pumps. As I have talked to many women and numerous lactation consultants, it turns out that 24mm is actually "small" and that most women will need the 27mm. I don't have large nipples by any means, but pumping with the 24mm shields left me bleeding within days because I had no idea it was the shields that caused the problem. I noticed the difference immediately after using this larger size- pumping is much more comfortable, it's faster, and I get a better yield. If you have any discomfort with your pump, try changing the shield size- you might be amazed! A lactation consultant told me to try them and at first I was hesitant- "large" for nipple shields? Think of the 27mm as standard or medium and realize that there are so many 24mm on store shelves because NO ONE BUYS THEM.

I did not believe myself to have large nipples, but I was frustrated at how little milk I was getting with the standard size breastshield, even with a hospital-grade pump (the Symphony). A lactation consultant suggested I try a larger breastshield. Indeed, these bring a little more breast into the cylinder which has resulted in slightly more milk being expressed. I also tried the SoftFit, which didn't do a thing for me. These are worth a try even if you don't think you have "large" nipples.

When I was using the standard size breastshields that came with the breast pump, my breasts were getting sore. I thought that was just how it was supposed to be. Then a nurse told me to try a larger size and I got these. Now my breasts no longer hurt at all when pumping and my nipples don't get stuck inside. The only thing that is strange to me is that the shape of the cone part seems different that the standard, so it feels a bit large, even though the nipple part fits fine.

I bought these for my Medela Freestyle pump and these are definitely a better fit than the size that come with the pump. Pumping is even more comfortable with this size. I'm around a 36C

That goodness for these! I had no idea I needed larger than average breastshields, but am so glad I gave these a try. I pumped for a year with my first child and wish I had had these. If only there was more information out there about how to tell if the fit is correct on the standard size. I feel like so many more people would be successful with pumping. The output I have experienced, the time, and the comfort is so immensely improved, I can't believe it. I googled how to find out if the breastshield was too small, and was linked to a Medela page which was helpful. If you have any doubt at all, it's worth a try for such a small price.

These shields really made the difference for me. I didn't realize there were different sizes and was having a hard time getting any milk when I pumped. I have a bigger chest made even larger by the extra nursing fullness. I did research online about how to get more milk when I pumped, and came across these. I still have problems with them leaking when I pump even when I lean forward. Not sure what the fix is for that but these are a good product. I am getting about 3-4 times as much milk as I was before.

Prior to giving birth to my now 8 week old baby girl I had purchased the 'Pump in Style' breastpump. The standard 24mm breastshield would only collect 1 to 2 ounces of breastmilk in half an hour, so because I wasn't sure to go for a smaller or larger breastshield, I ended up purchasing the 21mm and 27mm. The instructions I had seen for possible sizes didn't make sense. It turned out that the 27mm worked much better. Now it takes less than five minutes to pump (including assembling the parts). Also, because the milk is really in now the 24mm works better, still slower than the 27mm, but much better than 4 weeks ago.

I was worried when my milk production seemed to be decreasing. I read changing the shield size may help, and did it ever. Now I am again able to pump enough milk at work to feed my son for a day without having to pump when I am at home too.

I had to go through all the sizes before I realized I needed the 30mm. Even then, I think I could go bigger. Didn't realize I had big nipples. :) I would say to start with the larger size and go down, but then I could be wrong. I've been using the other sizes as funnels for cooking. Works great!

Pumping works so much better when your breastshields fit. Madela pumps come standard with medium (i.e. small) breastshields, which cause pain, irritation, and inadequate pumping. If you buy the Madela pump and you don't have very small nipples you probably need a different size breastshield. I normally have small nipples and breasts (B cup) but they get larger when I am pregnant. I needed the large size breast shields. It cut my pumping time in half and fully empties my breasts.
