Gr. 3-5. These titles from the African-American Biographies series examine the life and work of two important civil rights leaders. Hamer's biography begins with her desperately impoverished childhood as the last of 20 children born into a Mississippi sharecropper family and moves quickly to her attempt at 45-years-old to vote, which began Hamer's career as a civil rights activist and speaker. The Evers biography touches on the civil rights leader's Mississippi youth, but focuses on his career with the NAACP and his assassination at age 37. The text in both books is dry, but there's enough information to introduce the leaders' accomplishments to young readers who are unfamiliar with the history of the civil rights movement. Serviceable photographs illustrate the books, which include highlighted glossary terms, a time line, and lists of further readings. Ed Sullivan
