MediSoft Made Easy: A Step-by-Step Approach is a step-by-step student manual for using this popular accounting software. Assuming no prior knowledge of computer technology or medical informatics, this resource details the scope of administrative functions most frequently used in the medical office.
Computer technology is transforming all aspects of our lives, including how we think, analyze, educate, buy, protect, and care for one another. The term medical informatics refers to the use of computer technology in health care and its delivery. The skillful use of computers and software programs is the key to success in virtually all of today's professions. This is particularly true in health care fields, where students, health care providers, and office personnel need to use computer technology. MediSoft Made Easy addresses the medical office worker and student of medical office administration. MediSoft is computer software that can help computerize administrative functions in the medical office, including entering and editing patient information, provider information, and case information; entering and editing transaction charges, payments, and adjustment information; creating and managing claims; and creating and printing various kinds of reports. All this information is saved in tables in a relational database (an organized collection of related data).
The first chapter of MediSoft Made Easy is a general introduction to medical informatics. Chapter 2 familiarizes the reader with the Windows environment and basic Windows terminology. Chapter 3 is an overview of using MediSoft in the medical office. It should be noted that this book is written for a student in a classroom setting. Therefore, some of the events take place in an unrealistic time frame; for example, in Chapter 10, the discussion assumes the insurer pays a claim the same day a patient is seen. This would never happen.
Chapters 4-11 are a step-by-step hands-on introduction to MediSoft. We approached MediSoft as novice users would approach it, and present it to the student in the same fashion. We begin with an overview of MediSoft; and proceed to introduce each part of the program. In Chapter 4, the reader learns how to make appointments using MediSoft's scheduling software, the Appointment Book. In Chapter 5, the reader learns how to enter patient and case information. Chapters 6 and 7 introduce the reader to entering transactions and processing claims. In Chapters 8 and 9, the reader learns how to print and design reports. In Chapter 10, we review all the previous tasks by taking the student through the process of creating a new database for a new practice. Some tasks, such as using MediSoft utilities, cannot be performed in a classroom setting. However, these aspects of the program are surveyed in Chapter 11 so that the student has at least some familiarity with them in a real working environment.
An Appendix is recommended for students who have no knowledge of computers. It introduces the student to computers and computer literacy, including basic computer terminology.
