About the Author

Harlen Makemson is Associate Professor in the School of Communications at Elon University. He has a Ph.D. in journalism and mass communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has authored a number of refereed journal articles in the areas of media history and visual communication. His professional experience includes work as a newspaper reporter, editor, and designer.
