I bought one of these about a year ago. It is Great! I used the default software for the first few months. It's is very easy to use. Basically Plug it in and and setup your account. It literally takes less then 2 minutes. And then, login from anywhere in the word to access your files.

After a few months I decided to install Arch Linux on it so that I could ssh tunnel and do some other advanced things with it.

I just bought a second one for a friend.

Pros:
Easy to use.
It really is great for anyone.
Simple for the average person, but easily customizable to give the advanced user more power and option.

Cons:
It's not the fastest thing in the world. But I didn't expect it to be. When using the default software, it wants to convert videos for better streaming. This can take a while. But, other then the converting of the videos it works great and an advanced user can make that more efficient with a few scripts. It's as fast as I would expect from the specs.

Just a note for those planning to hack the device:

The box is labeled P21, but the actual device says E02. This is IDENTICAL to the pink V2, except in black. I was expecting a V3 ARMv6-based device. Keep that in mind if putting linux on it and follow the directions for the V2 PINK pogoplug!

If you're not planning on hacking it or putting linux on it, carry on! It'll work just the same so don't worry. It is a great little device. I took away 1 star because of the mislabeled model number.

I have two of these (E02 version with 2Tbyte HDs) paired with WD live players and I'm in heaven. I have all kind of videos types (around 400) , photos (around 2000), music files (around 5000) no issues with playing/streaming etc
Anyone comes to my house (with permission ofcourse ;-)) can play, see, and listen any of my media files through their android phones, tablets, laptops.
I noticed that some people were having issues with pogoplug and WD live player combination. They get disconnected or lose pogoplug during media play. This can be very frustrating indeed. I recommend converting pogoplug to squeeze plug (squeeze box) server. Search the internet about slimdevices, squeeze plug (squeeze box). There are lots of article about that. I do not use pogoplug service at all. I installed Debian with samba server (for windows share) and squeeze plug, logitech (squeeze box) server on pogoplug. It works like dream. You can install lots of different apps/os on it. Remember that you have a pc with armv5tel cpu inside pogoplug.

I have a 1 TB hard disk connected to this. Access files through Android Google Nexus, iPhone 3GS, and web. Once software is updated regularly, it has never failed. Serves its purpose for accessing files remotely. I don't want to trust dropbox, icloud or other services and pay a monthly payment. This you can control yourself and you manage. I also share lot of files with friends, and they download from my home server. Much easier than putting in third part file sharing services. Pogoplug devices are my favorite!

Okay, I used the off the shelf software for the P22, I did not do any Linux hacking:

This thing works pretty well for what I wanted:
-Automatically backs up all new files and changes to existing files in all monitored folders on all PCs on my home network
-Makes those files accessible for download through the internet through any web browser on any PC or tablet (of course the PC/tablet has to have a reader/player that can read that file to be useful to me)
-Makes those files accessible for download (or to delete or upload) through any PC that downloads and runs the desktop software. The desktop software makes the USB drive accessible through Windows Explorer so you can drag and drop files to or from that USB drive
-Streams the video files to my DLNA client software players on my Roku box and on my Kindle Fire HD - no problems as long as files do not need transcoding (if I have any non MP4 files, I convert them upfront using Handbrake or whatever and it works great)

What This Does Not Do Well:
-The initial load of the backup files from the PCs to the PogoPlug/USB drive is TOO SLOW. So, do an initial backup from each PC, physically connecting the USB drive to that PC. Then attach the USB drive to the PogoPlug for indexing and subsequent automatic backup. And still I had to wait days for the full indexing/backup process and during that time I had to work hard to resist the temptation to just add/replace more files to the drive manually or through the network (this seems to screw it up for a while).
-Instructions and/or Support. Forget About It. Instructions Are For People Who Need Them (that seems to be their attitude). But all you have to do is: 1) Go to my.pogoplug.com - 2) Ignore the pitch for the cloud stuff.

The Pogoplug software is not the best, but the device itself is great, and you can install Samba on the Pogoplug for brain-free sharing.

Using stock software, it's not immediately obvious how to mount the Pogoplug as a drive letter (start with Preferences in the Windows tray icon). I wanted to have the Pogoplug show up on the local network as a file share, like \\pogoplug\.

SO: I activated the Pogoplug online according to their directions, then enabled SSH on the settings page.
I found an article that explains how to set up Samba on the Pogoplug. The article was called "Installing Samba on the Pogoplug" by Aaron Randall.
I followed the instructions and now I have a network share, just like I wanted!
I changed some of the configuration details so the main share is read-only and only includes the parts I wants guests to have access to.
It's working great, and the file transfer speed (24 megabytes per second!) is way better than when I had my USB hard drive connected to my router.
And if I want to get into my files from elsewhere, I can still use the Pogoplug software to do that.

Edit: I also added a line to the Pogoplug startup file to relaunch Samba when it boots. This is risky since I could have messed up the startup file, and then it wouldn't boot properly. However I was careful and things are working well so far.
