Customer Reviews

As a bonus, the cable itself is very well made and thick, yet flexible.

Cable works as advertised: it shorts together the data pins so an android device will charge at full speed.

This turns a lot of mystery chargers into ones that will reliably charge my phone.

This cable allows you to use most USB chargers which do not meet the USB charging standard on your android phone without causing slow charging and battery-draining wakelocks. This is an extension cable to convert most cable and charger combinations to meet the standard.

Many if not most USB chargers these days deviate from the USB charging standard so they can be compatible with apple products. When you charge an android phone with these chargers and a standard micro USB cable, it causes a wakelock in many android phones which prevents it from entering deep sleep, once the phone is unplugged, and the phone will lose as much as an additional 10% battery per hour until you plug it into a USB standard charger or reboot the phone. I wonder how many people blame their phones for poor battery life when their real problem is using an apple-compatible charger?

Another problem is using an apple-compatible charger limits all phones and devices (except for those from apple) to a maximum of 500ma charging current, even if it could take 1200ma or more, which means it charges much slower. Of course, this is also a function of the charger - a cable cannot boost a charger only capable of producing 500ma to output more current. But it will allow chargers of sufficiently high power to provide the maximum current the phone or tablet wants.

Anyway, if you use this cable to charge your phone, you probably don't have to worry about any of this and your android and apple devices can live happily together using whatever charger you want. As a bonus, the cable itself is very well made and thick, yet flexible.

I edited this review once I used the cable a while.

With many smartphones and tablets, when you use an everyday USB data-syncing cable (and not necessarily the cable that came with your device)--especially on a typical computer's USB port--you have what's called a "trickle charge". You're able to charge the device while synchronizing data. However, the charging is a slow process since you're using only 2 out of the 4 conductors in the USB cable. At that point, it's best if you're not running too many active applications and the device's screen is turned off. This is the ideal situation in which to recharge the device. However, when the device has several active programs running and the screen is on, a trickle charge will barely keep the device at the same charge percentage. In fact, the device will start to slowly lose its charge as the cable struggles to keep up with the drain. A good example is running Google Maps, Glympse and your favorite music streaming app (with Bluetooth on to connect to your car stereo) at the same time.

This is where this adapter comes in. As advertised, the adapter takes your existing USB data-syncing cable and shorts the data lines through this adapter to turn it into a "charge-only" cable. This way you'll get close to the 500 mA the typical computer USB port provides. Furthermore, you'll also be able to draw the near-1.0 A (or more) from dedicated USB charging ports your power-hungry smartphone and tablets desire.

The sturdiness of this adapter gives me the impression it won't wear out anytime soon.

UPDATE
Through extra testing, I realized this adapter would not be able to fulfill my required needs. When I travel between cities, I like to run several programs simultaneously on my Android smartphone.

First things first, a little disclaimer thingy: to use this adapter with any device (GPS or phone or whatever else), be sure you’re connecting to a high power USB charger – preferably 2A or 2000mA (the same thing). It’s meant for these high power devices, and may cause problems with a charger that can only provide 500mA or 1000mA. Not all devices will draw 2000mA, but the ones that recognize what this cable does most likely will try and low power chargers won’t be able to keep up. More on this later.

I bought this little guy because of a "happy accident". I recently bought a Garmin nuvi 2597LMT, which offers lifetime map and traffic updates, and was tinkering with it on my computer doing updates and stuff. I was done with it for the moment and decided to charge it up while it was sitting there. I happened to plug it in to my Galaxy S4's factory charger (this is the happy accident part), and instead of powering up with the usual "I'm connected to a PC" screen and being pretty useless, it came up with the standard GPS screen. And not only that, but when I checked the settings it said that I was using a traffic report compatible power accessory. Say what? Well, sure enough, it worked perfectly. It gave me up to date traffic reports, even though I wasn't getting good GPS signal in my basement. Cool!

I did a little research, and it turns out that the S4's charger has the D+ and D- pins shorted together so that the phone knows it's connected to a high power charger which can provide 2A/2000mA and can get the full charging current it can take - is the original purpose for this cable adapter - force any USB charger to register to certain devices as a high power charger.
