Product Description

MacDrive is a must-have tool for anyone running Windows on a PC or a Mac. MacDrive for Windows takes all the guess work out disk accessibility. You are no longer stymied trying to access Mac -formatted hard drives, CDs, DVDs, iPod and more. With MacDrive installed moving files between Macs and PCs is a breeze. The best part about MacDrive is there is nothing to launch and nothing to learn - simply install and Windows understands Mac disks. Along with the ability to read and write to Mac disks and volumes, you can also create Mac disks for easy file transfers and backups. The built-in MacDrive Disk Manager gives you the power to partition, format, analyze and repair disks, while the newly revamped CD/DVD Creator allows you to burn Mac CDs and DVDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Macdrive 8 is a must-have if you have both PC and Mac October 18, 2009
By ruel
I have Macdrive 8 installed on our HP laptop running Windows Vista. It works. I was able to read and write to my USB external backup drive that has an exact mac-formatted mirror-image backup of the harddrive from my Macbook. I was able to use Windows Explorer to go through the mac-formatted drive to read and copy files. That's the basic capability that I wanted and that all works for me. Go to the MediaFour website to get the trial version of Macdrive 8 if you want to test it out for yourself. I've only used Macdrive 8 with Windows Vista. If you have Windows 7, the MediaFour website seems to indicate Windows 7 compatibility but they say to check for updates. Check with the MediaFour website for yourself.

For those who have both Mac and PC, I would suggest getting: (1) Macdrive 8 for your PC; and (2) Paragon NTFS for Mac 7 for your mac. You don't have to get both, but I have both for maximum flexibility for accessing drives from either mac or windows using either type of computer whether on a Mac or a windows-only PC. With Macdrive, I can read and write to mac-formatted drives using a windows PC (i.e., our HP laptop). And with Paragon NTFS for Mac, I can directly read and write to windows NTFS-formatted drives using my Macbook. Thank you for reading this short review.

So, at first, you'll love this program. It'll let you read and write to a Mac file system, which is absolutely invaluable when you have an external hard drive that you use to ferry files back and forth between a PC at home and a Mac at the university. It'll be awesome - you'll even be able to burn Mac-specific CDs.

Then, one day, the drivers will get corrupted. This won't happen for any particular reason - just because, on this day, the MacDrive gods decided to royally screw up your day. Your external hard drive will be corrupted, too, and require a reformat. Right around now, the program will become unresponsive, the uninstaller will stop working, and it won't even register as installed on your system as far as third-party uninstallers are concerned. Then, if you ever - EVER - restart your computer for ANY reason, you'll get a wonderful 0x00000108 BSoD on boot - corrupted third party file system. Because those MacDrive drivers for Mac hard drives? Yeah, they load at boot. What happens when corrupted drivers load at boot? You bluescreen.

Startup Repair won't be able to fix the problem. System restore might, if you have a restore point before you installed the infernal thing - but usually, it works just fine for two to three months, so most people won't have that option unless they're really meticulous about their backups.

At that point, you get to use file recovery software and reinstall Windows - a process that, in my case, took two days.

Lucky you.

But hey, who knows. Maybe you'll be one of the lucky few that it works flawlessly for, and it never, ever stops working on you, or corrupts a hard drive, or prevents your computer from booting. Sounds like half the people who use it have no problems.

How do you feel about those odds? Like leaving the stability of your system up to a coin toss?

I wouldn't risk it if I were you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice Idea. Bad Implementation. July 25, 2011
By Steve G
If you have Mac and PC in your family, eventually you will need this application. It is a great idea and allows cross-platform use. HOWEVER, the code is buggy and eventually ALL Macintosh formatted drives will become corrupt when used from the PC. It has happened over and over again. Finally, I have abandoned it entirely and am going to NTFS and will just use File Sharing and Bonjour. I think the problem is that it can't handle large drives (500GB+), but it is difficult to figure out. Tech support was NO HELP.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great concept except you forgot to make it work November 10, 2011
This software started off with a lot of promise until I tried accessing directories 4 or 5 levels deep. This unfortunately would lead to a freeze of my Vista operating system, requiring nothing less then a force restart of the entire computer. The workaround, of course, was to move any necessary info to the root level or within 2 directories deep for possible access. This workaround, however, only worked for a couple months and then even trying to access files at the root level would cause Windows to freeze and require a force restart.
Support was of little help, suggesting the drive was corrupted. I reformatted the drive via my mac but still experienced same issues when connecting to the Vista computer.
If it works for you consistently, you are very lucky - don't change anything.
If you don't have it yet, consider yourself warned.

If you are editing large video files, or for any reason need to transfer files between Mac and PC and you have to set up your portable hard drive to work for Mac, then this is the solution for you. This software allows you to connect portable hard drives that are compatible only with Mac to your PC and your PC can read them. It simple to install and works fine. Only problem is, that the company is very uptight about how many computers you can install it on. If you buy it and want it on your laptop and desktop, you will have to buy it twice.
