Medialink tech support resolved problems
on May 9, 2014
I have to offer a correction to my negative review. I finally called Medialink's technical support number and a technician there gave me some ideas for dealing with the terrible tendency of the router signal to not extend beyond the walls of the room it was situated in. The technician explained that the "automatic" channel option was problematic as it keeps searching for the best channel and thus frequently fails. He suggested trying channel 3, which I did. Since then, my problems - as described below - disappeared.
The truth is that I had been having a very frustrating experience with this router. It did not work as advertised. I bought it because it promised to extend the range and strength of my cable access point but it has done so on a very irregular basis. In other words, sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't unless I was in the same room with the router. That's why I didn't like it.
My computer is one room away from the router. There is a wooden door between my desk and the router. My desk is about 30 feet away from that door and the router is about 3 feet from the door. According to advertisements, this should present no problem for the router, but there are times that it totally fails to emit the signal sufficiently strong enough to get to my desk. There are other times that a couple of bars show up and the website spins and spins and spins before finally opening.
But, about a month after talking to the technician, the router continues to working as advertised.
