5.0 out of 5 stars A Med Student's indispensible guide for Alphabet Soup, April 23, 2009

Very useful little book. Went in the white-coat-pocket through Medschool and tagged along closely in FP Residency. Lost it in a long series of moves, and now I'm buying it again for my new office (helps the office staff understand do's and don'ts, too). Obviously useful for decoding an unfamiliar abbreviation. Also seriously calls attention to what abbreviations are so ambiguous that they should NEVER be used (ex: AA = African American, Alcoholics Anonymous, Amino Acids, and 20+ other possible phrases), which can be quite helpful given the recent hospital climate restricting the use of commonly misunderstood abbreviations. A discerning person could peruse the book and create their own personal "acceptable for use" list in the course of encountering others' risky mistakes or near-misses. In a word: Indispensible.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-have, May 27, 2008
This review is from: Medical Abbreviations: 10,000 Conveniences at the Expense of Communications and Safety (Paperback)
This, along with all of Neil Davis' abbreviation books, is extremely helpful and an essential for any healthcare worker. This was the first version that I owned while doing medical transcription and it was indispensable. I have recently purchased an updated version, but this is a nice starter.
