Book Description

February 2000 0897895924 978-0897895927 1

The field of medical anthropology is a discipline that incorporates the perspective of a wide range of approaches—from anthropologists, sociologists, epidemiologists, physicians, nurses, public health administrators, biologists, and many others, including the general public—to health care. This approach places culture and cultural relativism at the forefront and center of every model, and examines the ethics and fairness of health care issues associated with the African American population.

The author examines data on mortality, census, preventive health, alternative medical practices, clinical research, and intervention from a comprehensive perspective. Finally, fieldwork in a public health department setting provides the medical anthropologist with a unique opportunity to investigate cultural and health issues of a particular population in a public health setting. The author explains the steps and procedures for conducting an applied medical anthropological study, based on his experience doing fieldwork projects over the past 15 years.

More About the Author

I grew up in the midwest (Wilberforce, Ohio) and discovered one of my fields of expertise (Anthropology) from the very first class that I took at Central State University. Since that very first day in the anthropology class, I knew that I wanted to become an Anthropologist. Later in the year, I transferred to Miami Ohio (Oxford) and obtained my B.A. and M.A. degrees. Once graduated, I received a teaching assistantship from Wayne State University's Anthropology Department (Detroit) for 5 years and graduated with my doctorate degree in Anthropology.

This is one of the worst text books I have ever attempted to read. The multiple studies are based on essentially quantitative research and are extremely poor examples. Broad based conclusions are based on small samples, 25 to 38,studing multiple independent variables. Very judgimental conclusions about African-Americans are based on these small samples. One of my own research projects on post renal transplant compliance had a sample of 1500 from 55 centers and at this sample size major changes occurred. Gender and ethnicity (racial group) fell out. People became people and all did basically the same health behaviors. I would recommend this book to no one. Bonnie Siegal, PhD--Social Science Reseacher with 30 years experience in health care
