Excerpt from Foreword of AAMC President, Jordan J. Cohen, M.D. The landscape of the medical profession has changed dramatically in the half century since the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) first published the Medical School Admission Requirements (MSAR). But one important thing hasn't changed over that time: deciding to become a doctor is still one of the most momentous decisions one can ever hope to make. And let me be among the first to congratulate you on your decision. In my opinion, admittedly biased by my own gratifying experiences as a physician, no other profession offers as many challenges, as many chances to be of service to others, and as many opportunities for a satisfying and rewarding career.

More than that, I can't imagine a more exciting time to begin medical school. Just think of what you have to look forward to. Tomorrow's doctors will be at the forefront of the most dramatic developments in medical science in all of history. They will be armed with unimaginably powerful tools to relieve human suffering and prevent the ravages of disease. They will help shape technological improvements that will revolutionize both the way doctors conduct research and the way they diagnose and treat patients. And they will be in a position to help reshape the way the health care delivery system provides affordable services of high quality to everyone who needs them.

Yet despite this wealth of opportunity, I know that many aspiring medical school applicants are advised by some well-meaning friends and family members not to pursue their dream of becoming a doctor. It seems to me that those who proffer such advice are overly influenced by the current anxieties about the rising costs of medical care and by the prospects for a major restructuring of the way health care is organized and financed. What they fail to take fully into account, however, is a fundamental truth about the human condition: people get sick and, when they do, they need help. And that's what medicine is all about. Caring for and about people has always been, and always will be, the essence of the medical profession and the principal reason students continue to study medicine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Necessary for ALL Medical School Applicants, April 23, 2000
This review is from: Medical School Admission Requirements, United States and Canada, 2000-2001 (Paperback)
As a medical school applicant, I find this book invaluable. It answers all of the questions you'll have when choosing the medical schools to which you'll apply. It includes: a statement about each school's mission, their curriculum, their selection criteria for incoming first-year students, as well as a table of statistics for last year's entering class, including: number applied in and out of state, number interviewed, number accepted, date of acceptance, tuition cost, etc. This book includes all AMCAS and NON-AMCAS schools as well as schools in Canada and Peurto Rico. Each school is highlighted on a consistent, easy to read two-page format. Unless you have access to a reference copy of this book, make the investment, it's well worth it! This book is useful for both the stellar applicants, i.e. those of you who can PICK yourself which school you'll be attending, and for those of you who are willing to go to any school who accepts you!

4.0 out of 5 stars An Important Resourse, April 25, 2000
This review is from: Medical School Admission Requirements, United States and Canada, 2000-2001 (Paperback)
This book helped me a great deal during the past year while applying to Med School. I even used it to help decide which school to attend once I was accepted. The only downside is that the info comes from the schools, so do you should do your own research to get actual student opinions.
