Book Description

This best selling book on medical statistics has been updated and expanded to take into account recent developments and trends in the way statistics is taught and used in medicine and has new sections on summarising qualitative data including measures such as number needed to treat, logistic regression, quasi-experimental studies, and cluster randomised trials. It uses real examples taken from current literature and is highly readable and easy-to-use.
Written by two experts with wide teaching and consulting experience, the book is designed for medical students and nurses but will also be invaluable to practising doctors wishing to remind themselves of the essentials of statistical design and interpretation.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The presentation is superb. The examples are intriguing…brief yet effective…biostatisticians and clinical researchers should have this book in their collections." (Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, September 2005)

"The book is clearly written with an abundance of examples which help greatly in the understanding of statistical principles. The text is extremely comprehensive, covering classical statistics as well as more recent developments. The major strength of the book is that it shows how epidemiology and statistics are two very much related disciplines in medical research. The book will be of value to those just starting a study of statistics and epidemiology as well as to those with more experience who will find it a valuable reference source. I would thoroughly recommend the book, which is competitively priced."—A. Hart, Consultant Physician (Postgraduate Medical Journal)

"...a simple, interesting and insightful introduction to medical statistics...highly recommended." (Statistical Methods in Medical Research, Vol 9, 2000)

"Campbell and Machin found the golden mean...this book can be recommended for all students and all medical researchers." (ISCB Newsletter, December 2000)

"A clearly written, well illustrated text ..." (Jnl of Paediatric Endocrinology & Metabolism, Vol. 13/9, 2000)

From the Publisher

Provides busy medical students, nurses and doctors with a concise explanation of the underlying principles in medical statistics, yet keeps techniques in the background. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars terse and with inaccuracies, September 12, 2009

By the table of contents, I thought this book would be well organized. Many medical statistics books have inaccuracies regarding use of chi-square test, how to analyse small group data, etc. This has inaccuracies in tables (such as recommending yates correction of chisquare test for expected values less than 5) that don't even match the text. It has tests with poor examples and lack of steps for even use of the test under discussion. I would recommend Practical Statistics for Medical Research as a much better textbook for actually understanding and performing statistical tests encountered in the medical field.

2.0 out of 5 stars Riddled with errors, October 30, 2011
The first 20 pages (all I've read so far) are riddled with grammatical errors and typos (e.g., "One categorical variable recorded was the type of delivery. in five categories as displayed in Table 2.1." (p. 15); "Commonly, one my chose" (p. 17); "If we anticipate that the treatment to reduce some bad outcome (such as deaths) then it may be known as the absolute risk reduction" (p. 17)). I figured I could just ignore these, but then I ran across this on page 18: "...is 20/100,000 = 0.00002". I'm sorry, but this is inexucusable in an introductory textbook. Shame on the publisher for doing such a shabby copy-editing job. These errors don't give me much faith in the material yet to come in the book!
