"This book is a beauty. It is the latest in the series of special volumes on Topics in Down Syndrome brought out lovingly by Woodbine House. And it is the first health care book in Down syndrome specifically directed to parents. The material has been gathered by two pediatricians, a nurse, and an editor, all from the University of Iowa-and they have engaged good workers and champs from all over to do the rest of the chapters. It is a chunky (400 page) paperback at a reasonable price, with an earnest, careful, caring style. The usual chapters are all there (heart, endocrine, eye, skin, gastro-intestinal, orthopedic, etc.) and well done, mostly about 20 pages each. And there is a group of chapters not usually found, and very strategic-on decision-making, preventive care, the immune system, dentistry, sexuality, anesthesia, and unconventional therapies. This is a fine book. I recommend it for professionals as well as families. Everyone should have it! - Allen C. Crocker, M.D. Down Syndrome News, May 1996

Every medical topic I wanted to know about!,
By Fran Smith (New Baden, Illinois) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Medical & Surgical Care for Children with Down Syndrome: A Guide for Parents (Topics in Down Syndrome) (Paperback)
I found this book in the library of my son's early intervention office. Everything I have encountered with him, I was able to find in the book. It even talked about the delay of the emergence of his primary teeth. I wish I had known of its existence sooner. A must have for parents, grandparents, doctors and other caregivers!

This review is from: Medical & Surgical Care for Children with Down Syndrome: A Guide for Parents (Topics in Down Syndrome) (Paperback)
We purchased this book when our 2 day old son was in the hospital for heart problems and diagnosed with Down Syndrome. The book is full of important information for parents and doctors and is written in a language that parents can understand. In the past three years, we have used this book many times to answer questions, learn what to look for, and to train ourselves in how to handle certain medical conditions. Knowledge is power.
