Using a programmed learning format, this user-friendly, four-color book allows students to learn medical terminology at their own pace. The material is divided into small, easy-to-read units called frames. Each frame ends with a fill-in sentence or question that tests readers' understanding of the frame's content.

The text begins with the basic components of medical terminology -- suffixes, prefixes, word roots, and combining forms -- and presents the material according to the major body systems.

4.0 out of 5 stars Makes learning med terminology easy, October 2, 2003

This review is from: Medical Terminology Simplified (Book and Audiocassette) with CDROM (Paperback)
This book makes learning medical terminology very easy. At first I was skeptical of the "programmed learning" approach - it seemed much too repetitive and grade school-ish. However, I found that as I finished each chapter in the workbook, I retained the majority of the information. I definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn the basics of medical terminology without putting forth a great deal of effort. I found the workbook to be fun, and the CD, which includes sample quizzes and learning activities, was extremely helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great system for learning terminology quickly, June 15, 2006
I am a midwifery student and I needed to learn medical terminology. This book is set up like a workbook. You can fill it in as you go. By filling in the blanks, making up flash cards, and taking the quizzes, I was able to learn a lot of medical terminology in a short amount of time. Much of the terminology in medicine is very logical, using root words, suffixes and prefixes. If you learn these, you can figure out the meaning of a lot of medical terms. Filling in blanks (especially when a lot of the answers are obvious) may seem redundant and like busy work, but by using more modalities for your learning process (auditory as you listen to the cd's, visual as you read, tactile as you write), you learn it so much more quickly and easily. There were some typos in the book and a few frames that were written incorrectly or in a confusing manner but not many. If you pay attention, you will catch them. I would advise the editors to do a better proofreading job in the next edition. This book is totally worth it if you are just starting out in the medical field. It is basic terminology but it will give you a great start. The book also covers some pathological, diagnostic, and therapeutic terms, as well as a section where you can practice reading sample medical records. Make sure you buy a book that is not filled in so you can fill it in yourself and get the most out of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars OK book , nice quizzes, October 8, 2005
I'm a pharmacy student. This book is a required text for one of my classes. I have a strong background in anatomical and medical terminology. This book is very good for somebody, who is completely new to medical terminology. Even though the book itself does not help you very much, the quizes that come with accompanying CD are excellent. While you do the quizes you can check some words at the dictionary which is an integral part of the program. By doing the quizes for each chapter a few times, you can learn medical terminology.
