Makes learning med terminology easy,
By "sjordan96" (Loveland, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Medical Terminology Simplified (Book and Audiocassette) with CDROM (Paperback)
This book makes learning medical terminology very easy. At first I was skeptical of the "programmed learning" approach - it seemed much too repetitive and grade school-ish. However, I found that as I finished each chapter in the workbook, I retained the majority of the information. I definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn the basics of medical terminology without putting forth a great deal of effort. I found the workbook to be fun, and the CD, which includes sample quizzes and learning activities, was extremely helpful.

Great system for learning terminology quickly,

I am a midwifery student and I needed to learn medical terminology. This book is set up like a workbook. You can fill it in as you go. By filling in the blanks, making up flash cards, and taking the quizzes, I was able to learn a lot of medical terminology in a short amount of time. Much of the terminology in medicine is very logical, using root words, suffixes and prefixes. If you learn these, you can figure out the meaning of a lot of medical terms. Filling in blanks (especially when a lot of the answers are obvious) may seem redundant and like busy work, but by using more modalities for your learning process (auditory as you listen to the cd's, visual as you read, tactile as you write), you learn it so much more quickly and easily. There were some typos in the book and a few frames that were written incorrectly or in a confusing manner but not many. If you pay attention, you will catch them. I would advise the editors to do a better proofreading job in the next edition. This book is totally worth it if you are just starting out in the medical field. It is basic terminology but it will give you a great start. The book also covers some pathological, diagnostic, and therapeutic terms, as well as a section where you can practice reading sample medical records. Make sure you buy a book that is not filled in so you can fill it in yourself and get the most out of it.

OK book , nice quizzes,
This review is from: Medical Terminology Simplified: A Programmed Learning Approach by Body Systems (includes audio CD, and Interactive Medical Terminology, version 2.0.) (Hardcover)
I'm a pharmacy student. This book is a required text for one of my classes. I have a strong background in anatomical and medical terminology. This book is very good for somebody, who is completely new to medical terminology. Even though the book itself does not help you very much, the quizes that come with accompanying CD are excellent. While you do the quizes you can check some words at the dictionary which is an integral part of the program. By doing the quizes for each chapter a few times, you can learn medical terminology.

Easy to Use, Easy to Learn,
By S. Kawimber "School Mom" (Florida, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Medical Terminology Simplified: A Programmed Learning Approach by Body Systems (text with audio CD) (Hardcover)
This book has an excellent format for teaching one medical terminology by breaking down medical words into distinct components. It is very user friendly, providing the "daily work" answers in an easily covered column to the left of the text, however, answers to the reviews and quizzes are in the back of the book to ensure more accurate testing of your knowledge. There is much review which helps cement the concepts. Since the chapters are laid out by body system, they can be taken out of order, if necessary without losing any information. Also included are true-to-life medical record transcriptions for the user to read, decipher, and answer questions. The book suggests using a medical dictionary, such as Taber's, for words which are not defined in the text and I agree. Not every medical term is included in the terminology book so an additional source of definition is needed to answer the questions on the medical record assignments. I am returning to school after more than 20 years and have been able to use this book with great success.

review of a textbook,

They have some items in the book wrong. Hopefully your instructor or professor have already found the pages. The dji-intestine stuff is set up in wrong order of the book-be sure to have your instructor/professor note this in their book or lecture. Haven't gone thru the whole book yet but you are forewarned. But the setup is easy to study with if that is any consolation.

When I first started my Medical Assisting course I just couldn't grasp or remember much of anything. After I started using this book though, terminology words started sticking in my brain. I like this book very much and recommend it highly!

I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn the basics of medical terminology. Comes with three cds. One cd is for taking chapter tests in addition to the ones in the book, the other 2 cds are the key points in the chapters. Great for listening while cleaning and cooking. After using this book, I feel confident in moving forward with training to become a Medical Transcriptionist. This is staying in my collection, as a great reference book.
