I can't believe that i was lucky enough to be referred to this book when I was pregnant with my second child. Now I'm pregnant with my fourth and i'm ordering the new, updated 2004 version. My 2002 is barely holding together after countless girlfriends borrowed it to use through their pregnancies and breastfeeding.

I'm ordering it now because I need to know about a new allergy medicine on the market and this book is the only resource that has the information that is so critical to know when you have a little one involved. I can't believe every doctor doesn't have a copy of this. I bring it to my general physician's, pediatrician's and OBs offices when i have appointments so that they can reference the tables and know how much of the medications the fetus or newborn is getting. I suffer from depression and allergies and i feel so much more confident with the drugs i take.

I can't imagine not being this informed. I highly recommend (encourage is an understatement) that anyone pregnant, invest in this book now.

This book is a "must have" for anyone who worries about which medications are safe while breast feeding. It includes information on how long the medication affects your milk supply, how much of the medication could potentially be passed on to the infant, and what side effects could occur both for mother and infant. It covers a very broad range of drugs- from over the counter cold remedies to "street drugs", and everything in between. I have no medical background, but I found the book to be very clear and easy to understand.

If you are a nursing mom, this book will quickly become one of your favorites!

This is book is simply essential if you are breast feeding. Most doctors will simply say about almost any medicines that you cannot take them until you stop breastfeeding. And this book has the authorititave answer as to whether you really can or not.
Should also be useful also during pregnancy.

All health care professionals who interact with nursing mothers and/or their babies need this resource.

I purchased this as a resource for La Leche League. We receive countless calls from mothers who are curious about which medications they can utilize while nursing. They, because of their health care providers, are frequently mis-informed. This book truly sets the record straight.

Kudos to Dr. Hale for creating such an amazing resource. His research has greatly assisted many mothers in need.

As a pharmacist and a breastfeeding mother, I have found this book to be the ultimate resource in medications in lactation. Unfortunately many clinicians rely on package inserts of medications or the PDR when determining whether or not a medication is safe to use in breastfeeding. Because these references are products of the manufacturer of the medication, often times the drug is not recommended during lactation based liability concerns and not actual data. While suffering a postpartem infection, I actually had the practitioner try and give me numerous samples of formula while taking an antibiotic that I knew was not orally absorbed. Hale's book confirmed what I knew, the medication is not orally absorbed and therefore cannot pass into the breastmilk. Had I not had my pharmacy background, I would have been forced to give up breastfeeding for nothing (I couldn't keep up my supply on pumping alone). This book gives the facts and data needed to help make the best decision about medications in lactation, and he encourages that those decisions be made on a risk vs. benefit basis, not on the basis of liability. While I find this book very beneficial, it may be more difficult for a person without a medical background to interpret and assess all of the information. However, Hale does give each medication a rating that is easily interpreted.

As a breastfeeding mother, I have found this book to be an excellent resource. It's great to carry with you to a doctor appointment. My family physician even asked me for the name of it, she liked it so much. I highly recommend this book for every breastfeeding mom.

Thomas Hale has been the foremost authority on the safety of breastfeeding with prescription and non-prescription medications, herbs, and supplements. Dr. Hale's book is, most importantly, easy to use even by people not from the health care fields. He describes the use of each medication, potential side effects to mother and baby, and of course the pregnancy and breastfeeding compatibility ratings for each medication. He includes a brief but essential paragraph for each medication where he mentions any anecdotal information not mentioned in the other parts of each entry.

As a lactation consultant I refer to it frequently, but I also enjoy browsing through it as a consumer. It's a fast reference guide to the medications my family and I use for everything from the common cold or allergies to heart medications.

Nice resource although Drugs in Lactation and Pregnancy is just as thorough...
The benefit of this book over the previously mentioned is it is soft cover, smaller and more portable, not as heavy to carry.

Very helpful if you use over-the-counter or prescription medication and want to know if it is safe. Has information many doctors and pharmacists do not have.

This book is wonderfully organized. It tells you just what you need. The index is perfect. It's a must-have resource for breastfeeding mamas.
