Invaluable resource, especially for pediatic and obstetric care.,
By
This review is from: Medications and Mothers' Milk (Paperback)
As a pediatrician, I find that this book and the Red Book are the two that I refer to more than any other. Dr. Hale's thorough research and well-organized presentation make this a very easy to use resource. I get many questions from mothers who had medications prescribed by another practitioner about whether the prescribed medication can safely be taken while breastfeeding. I've also had calls from mothers saying that their provider is nervous about prescribing a medication without knowing whether it is safe. Unfortunately, many pharmaceutical companies simply recommend that their medications not be used during breastfeeding due to the time and money needed to do appropriate studies, the potential risk should an adverse effect be uncovered, and the limited market potential involved in clearing a drug for breastfeeding. Dr. Hale's book lets me quickly review the literature, and give recommendations based on the best evidence available. My experience has been that many of the drugs about which I have gotten questions appear to be safe during pregnancy, allowing me to reassure breastfeeding mothers, treat their own conditions, and continue to breastfeed. This book is a tremendous boon to anyone who wants to promote children's health by promoting breastfeeding, and I would recommend it without reservation.

This is an invaluable resource for nursing AND pregnant women. It gives great information from every day drugs like Ibuprophen to every strange drug out there. It explains tests that were done on nursing women and what the half life of the drug is. It gives recommendations on how long to nurse your baby after taking the drug and what level of medication your baby receives. It also give a rating for pregnancy. This is an easy to understand and must-have resource!

As a pharmacist, this is absolutely the first book I turn to for any question about medication and breastfeeding. It's very readable, and has both the quick, "bottom-line" recommendation and an explanation of the quality and quantity of research that led to that conclusion. I recommend it to anyone in the medical field who might encounter a breastfeeding patient as well as any woman who is currently breastfeeding or plans to in the near future. The author's website ([...]) is also useful.
If the answers you're looking for aren't here, or if you're looking for detailed recommendations about medications in pregnancy, try your local teratology information service (www.otispregnancy.org). Most of them accept calls from both the public and health care professionals, many of them handle both lactation and pregnancy questions, and it's free to call and get information. I'm not affiliated with them in any way, but I've found them a very useful resource that doesn't seem to be very well publicized.

As a new mom, I was very paranoid to ingest any medicines. This book informed me of all medications, AND vitamins. I was looking for a book that also contained herbs. This one has a few, and a good rating system. Very clear, and layperson terms.

As a busy Women's Health NP, I have used other texts on medication use in pregnancy and during lactation, as well as Dr. Hale's website. I find this book enormously helpful in my practice. It is clear and concise, as well as being very comprehensive. It is great to bring into the exam room to review the information with the patient.

This book is packed with helpful information. Although it is written for the healthcare provider, a mother who wanted the full story on how a particular medication affects breastfeeding would find a wealth of information here. Dr. Hale is recognized around the world as the leading expert on drugs and lactation; he has done a vast amount of research and presents it here in a detailed, well-organized format. Anyone who works with pregnant or breastfeeding mothers in a healthcare capacity should have this book on their shelf to refer to.

AWESOME book!!! I use it constantly. I've also compared the info in the book with what my pediatrician and a lactation consultant recommend and found that the info in the book corresponds with both.
