5.0 out of 5 stars Finally !!! Someone has the answers to my questions!!!!!
I've suffered with migriane headaches, CFS, and FMS for over 13 years. I have been to so many doctors (medical doctors, chiropractors, osteopaths...) that I've lost count. Whenever I asked these doctors why I feel like a 90 y.o. in a 38 y.o. body, they would all look at me with a blank stare. Some of these fruitcakes even suggested that it was all in my head (IAIMH)...

1.0 out of 5 stars Deceptive title
I was really looking forward to reading this book, thinking I would find some help in dealing with my FM and migraines. However, I was greatly disappointed. The first few chapters give alot of personal information about the author that no one needs to know. The rest of the book is highly technical and gives the reader absolutely no help for what you can personally do...

Some of these fruitcakes even suggested that it was all in my head (IAIMH). Dr. Michael Johnson has FINALLY given me the answers that I've been looking for all these years. Now I know why my memory is poor, why I get tongued-tied, why I'm light sensitive, and I suffer with chronic pain. Plus, this book is loaded with case histories. Time after time while I read this book, I would say to myself: "That sounds just like me"! If you suffer from chronic pain the way I have, PLEASE read this book! I've read a ton of books on FMS,CFS, and migraines and this is by far the best!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Help and hope for chronic pain sufferers, March 28, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: What Do You Do When the Medications Don't Work? A Non-Drug Treatment of Dizziness, Migraine Headaches, Fibromyalgia, and Other Chronic Conditions (Paperback)
For anyone who suffers from chronic fatigue, chronic pain such as fibromyalgia, and other conditions that don't respond to traditional medicines, WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN THE MEDICATIONS DON'T WORK? by Dr. Michael L. Johnson offers a ray of healing hope. The author, a Chiropractic Neurologist and founder of one of the nation's first multi-disciplinary clinics documents case after case of patients he has worked with, and treated, with the groundbreaking procedures he has helped develop. Using both his understanding of the human brain and the relationship between the brain chemicals and hormones and the chronic conditions that plague millions of people, Dr. Johnson provides a foundation of multi-disciplinary healing that can be applied to anyone tired of dealing with debilitating migraines, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, vertigo, numbness and a variety of other conditions.

This book doesn't just outline theories and offer up treatments, it explains in fully understandable detail why our bodies react the way they do, how we become diseased in the first place, what role the brain plays in our aches and ailments, and how the combination of chiropractic techniques and neurological treatments that target the brain can provide a relief from pain that ordinary pills and procedures cannot.

I was fascinated by the explanation of the various parts of the human brain, and which parts are responsible for causing which pains and sensations we suffer. The non-drug tests and treatments suggested in this book seem to target those exact brain parts and chemical imbalances that create the problem, rather than just masking symptoms. The comprehensive examinations Dr. Johnson provides his patients, combined with his actual healing techniques, are all personally designed to the patient's needs, rather than just taken from a big, fat medical diagnosis textbook. He truly gets as much information on his patients as he can before he commences any kind of treatment, so that when he does begin work, whether it is using chiropractic manipulation or some type of exercise designed to stimulate a certain area of the brain and get those neurons firing, that work is all but guaranteed to produce a positive effect on the patient.

In fact, so many of Dr. Johnson's patients report incredible results from their treatments, results they have never come close to receiving using traditional doctors who practice "old school" medicine.

I have friends with fibromalgyia and migraines, and plan to tell them all about WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN THE MEDICATIONS DON'T WORK because, after reading it, I believe it is a great alternative to what most doctors offer - which is usually some expensive pharmaceutical or impractical surgery. Dr. Johnson's amazing research and clinical work with patients opens up a whole new world of healing for the most stubborn cases of chronic pain, offering new hope to those who have all but given up hope.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book with Good Info, July 18, 2005
This review is from: What Do You Do When the Medications Don't Work? A Non-Drug Treatment of Dizziness, Migraine Headaches, Fibromyalgia, and Other Chronic Conditions (Paperback)
A patient of mine gave me a copy of this book and asked for my opinion. He has been suffering from dizziness for the past seven years. I am a family physician and have referred this patient to numerous specialists over the years. I have never heard of a "chiropractic neurologist", but I found this book to be very informative. In the first two chapters the author explains his path to health after he had suffered from migraine headaches for many years. I enjoyed the case histories in many of the chapters and found some of the treatments interesting. I say "interesting" because I may not agree with all of them. I placed a call to the author to ask specific questions concerning my patient and I was impressed with his grasp of what could be causing the vertigo. I recommended my patient to this author and I will recommend his book to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ for chronic pain sufferers!, March 31, 2004

This review is from: What Do You Do When the Medications Don't Work? A Non-Drug Treatment of Dizziness, Migraine Headaches, Fibromyalgia, and Other Chronic Conditions (Paperback)
This is definitely a must-read for everyone who suffers from migraines, fibromyalgia, dizziness, vertigo, or any chronic pain condition. It explains - in great detail but very simple language - how these conditions arise and what YOU can do to help them. Dr. Johnson explains that chronic pain is caused by your brain not working properly, and he shows how you can fix it without using drugs. He explains how simple treatments like using a squeeze ball in one of your hands or doing mazes will stimulate your brain and help your condition. All of the patients that Dr. Johnson talks about are typical chronic pain patients - they have been suffering for years, they have tried tons of treatments, and many of them have become depressed because doctors can't do anything for them. But after doing Dr. Johnson's neurological treatments, they all notice huge changes - it's really amazing to read about. I am definitely going to recommend this book to my friends who have these chronic pain conditions or who have family members with chronic pain and want to help. I think it could really change their lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Help for the Hopeless, April 11, 2005

This review is from: What Do You Do When the Medications Don't Work? A Non-Drug Treatment of Dizziness, Migraine Headaches, Fibromyalgia, and Other Chronic Conditions (Paperback)
I suffered with fibomyalgia for 18 years before my family physician (yes, you heard it right, as in M.D) handed me a copy of this book. I read it in one day which is probably the fastest that I have ever read a book in my life. I finished it on a Sunday and on Monday I called Dr. Johnson's office to schedule an appointment. I became a patient even though it was a one hour drive one-way to his offfice. That was 6 months ago and I can honestly say that this is the best I have felt in the last 13 years. I have more energy, I am sleeping better than I have in my life, and best of all, I am free of pain. Sure I get minor aches and pains like everyone else if I over do it, but I finally feel "normal" again for the first time in years.
This book is right on the money and if you suffer, then you have to read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read on chronic pain, April 7, 2005
By
This review is from: What Do You Do When the Medications Don't Work? A Non-Drug Treatment of Dizziness, Migraine Headaches, Fibromyalgia, and Other Chronic Conditions (Paperback)
I totally disagree with the last two reviewers. They sound like jealous chiropractors or medical doctors which is probably who they really are. I love the way they don't use their names. If they don't have enough guts to use their names and reveal their true identity, they are a simple fraud. This book is hands down one of the best books that I have read in my 17 long years of suffering with migraine headaches and fibromyalgia. I had been to over 21 doctors and I have spent thousands of dollars of my own money all without results. All of the medical doctors wanted to simply put me on more meds. "Here, try this one. Oh, that didn't work? Here's another!" Chiropractors would make me worse. Dr. Johnson was able to put me in touch with a chiropractic neurologist in Chicago after I heard him on WGN and read his book. After 7 weeks of care, I have NEVER felt better. Thank God for Dr. Johnson!

A great read! I agree with the last review. This book is a refreshing change from the standard medical treatment of pills, pills and more pills.

Dr. Johnson outlines a new approach in the treatment of chronic conditions. I really thought the case histories made for interesting reading. I didn't feel alone, other people were experiencing the same symptoms I am. I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!!!, April 11, 2005
This review is from: What Do You Do When the Medications Don't Work? A Non-Drug Treatment of Dizziness, Migraine Headaches, Fibromyalgia, and Other Chronic Conditions (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It gave me hope that I can get better. I hope that I can find a Chiropractic Neurologist in my area that cares about his patients as much as Dr. Johnson. I did not understand why I was suffering from constant pain and light-headedness until I read this book. I really identified with a number of the case histories that were presented in the chapters on migraines and dizziness. Although there were some big words used, the author explained them as he went along. If you suffer from chronic pain or dizziness, I highly recommend "What Do You Do When the Medications Don't Work?"

I was really looking forward to reading this book, thinking I would find some help in dealing with my FM and migraines. However, I was greatly disappointed. The first few chapters give alot of personal information about the author that no one needs to know. The rest of the book is highly technical and gives the reader absolutely no help for what you can personally do to deal with chronic pain issues. The whole book comes across with an arrogant tone--"this is what you have to do to be cured, and I am the only person in the whole United States that can do it." With the title the book was given, I expected some information on what I could do to help myself or at least some information on how to find a doctor/medical professional close to home that might be able to help me. Nope! Save your money and your time.

I heard this author on the radio, so I ordered his book because I have suffered with fibromyalgia for the past 6 years. I thought the book gave some good information, so I called Dr. Johnson's office and asked if they could refer me to someone in Boston who could help me. The receptionist told me that someone would get back to me by the end of the day. Later on that afternoon, I received a call from the author himself. He told me that he had a good friend that practices in Boston and that he would help me get in to see him as soon as possible. I have an appointment set up for next week and I am looking forward to feeling better.
