I am a medical student, and this book was recommended to me by the senior resident on my OB/Gyn clerkship. He said it provided a handy reference for H&P and admission orders, no matter what service you are on. We had a copy on reserve at our library and checked it out to see if it could really be useful. After looking it over, I bought it and have kept it in my white coat as a quick, easy reference that has saved me tons of time as well as helped familiarize me with management of many common medical conditions.-This is not a Mass-Gen style guide that gives you a reference regarding pathophysiology of disease to help you with studying for shelf exams or looking up facts. It is meant as a practical guide to help with admissions and orders. There are 4 basic parts to this book: 1. Medical Documentation - Gives you basic outlines/examples of an H&P, progress/procedure/discharge notes, a discharge summary, and prescription writing. This may be stuff you're sure that you know, but a quick reference for late or busy call nights can come in pretty handy. 2. ACLS Algorithms - You SHOULD know these, but again having them easily accessible is always a good idea. 3. System-Based guidelines - Even if you're a gunner than can work up Nonketotic Hyperosmotic Syndrome on your own, you may not know how to write specific admission orders for that patient: such as to which service/unit they should be admitted, what their diet/activity/vitals/nursing/medication orders are, or when a physician should be contacted. This book lays that all out, and while protocols differ between facilities, being familiar with the general protocols is a sure-fire way to impress your intern or resident, and maybe even the attending. This holds true particularly if you are at a facility where medical students can write orders as long as they are reviewed and signed by a supervising physician because you will save them precious time. 4. Common formulas,drug levels, and abbreviations - Pretty self explanatory. Bottom Line: This book is extremely small and will easily fit in a white coat. It will help medical students take a greater role in the care of patients on the wards, and will show that you have initiative as well as possibly impress your supervisors, if not only making their lives easier. As a bonus, it comes with a digital copy with updates. I have been using this book for a while now, and highly recommend it for any medical student who wants to go the extra mile and ease the transition from medical student to intern.

Use it daily. I like to glance through it before signing off my orders ... just to make sure in the craziness & with all the interruptions, I didn't forget to write an order. The simplicity & organization of the topics makes it so easy to use. I like the lists of extras & prns - helps make sure my orders are complete so that I don't have to be called later & my patients have everything they need upon arrival to the floor. The size of the book makes it super convenient & it is priced so that I'm not afraid to take it with me out of the office into the ER.

I can not tell you the number of times I have had to use this book to save me while doing admissions in the ER. It tells you everything that you need to know, from the floor to admit the patient to, to the PRN meds needed, and doses commonly used. You can't beat the price and the invaluable info the book contains. BUY IT NOW! :-)
