I've had this album for well over 2 years....and i'll still playin it to death! Lynden David Hall's vocals are so damn soulful, sung over some cool mellow grooves. If you're into D'angelo or Maxwell or Erykah Badu, I highly recommend you add this cd to your collection!

Lynden is a really talented guy, what has happened to him? after the 2nd album he just seemed to disappear, he was briefly in the film love actually, and hopefully now he will be coming back with a new album. As the UK needs him as there arent enough Uk artists like him.if anyone knows whether he is releasing a new album or not let me know. ps sexy cinderella is still Lyndens best track, but hopefully there will be more to come.

With a slew of profound artists coming out of the UK, is it really a surprise to anyone that Mr. Hall is as nice as he is? C'mon now! UK soul has always been at the forefront of the music scene. (Please don't get me started!) Although it is safe to make comparisons to D'Angelo, Maxwell, or whoever is dubbed Crown Prince of Soul at the time, Hall shines on his own. The songwriting on this album is brilliant. Check the messages instilled with the music. Personally, I like track six "Livin' The Lie" cause it tackles age old concerns of a pernicious evil called racism. There is something here for everyone though. Whether you're in love, cold chillin' or just wanting to vibe to something original yet funky! Give this an ear--for real!Watson: Cherubica@msn.com

In this day and age, there are not too many album where by you can let play, and whilst every track might not be a winner, the album itself is just SOOOO good.Thsi is such an album. I intially brought this Album on the strength of the first single,'Sexy Cinderella'. And to be honest I didn't like this CD on first hearing. But it's a grower. I would recommend that you give yourself a week or two to listen to this. It is worth the time and effort. Also thwe subject matter varies from a weird love triangle(The Jimmy Lee story,), social injustice(Livin the Lie). My favourites cuts are, the afore mentioned Sexy Cinderella, I wish I knew, and Yellow in Blue, which is a beautiful song. Enjoy!

Debut of Great Promise...,
This review is from: Medicine 4 My Pain (Audio CD)
UK soul star Lynden David Hall made a big impact with this, his debut LP. Drawing comparisons to D'Angelo (who had himself just emerged two years previous) and clearly influenced by the likes of Prince, Sly Stone and Curtis Mayfield it was clear Lynden was ready to challenge the pre-conceptions of British "R&B"...Mainstream acclaim was close at hand due to the major success of singles "Sexy Cinderella" (Still Lynden's signature tune) and "Do I Qualify?". Both are catchy, chilled, mid-tempo anthems which compliment each other well as the opening pair of the album. The other singles "Crescent Moon" and the title track are equally worthy, the former being melodic yet slightly hampered by an up-in-the-mix bongo drum throughout. "Medicine 4 The Pain" is a beautiful ode to his father in which the artist sings with open heart. All being said there isn't a weak moment to be found on this retro-styled, organically instrumented effort and it's definitely worth checking out. I do feel however, that Lynden took it up a level with his "The Other Side" set three years later. In production, songcraft and artistry the improvement was marked. "Medicine 4 My Pain" proved a precursor of what was to come from a talent in full ascension though, there's no doubt about it...

Just to add to everybody elses comments and say that this album is absolutely brilliant. The one song that does it for me has to be track 4, 'There goes my sanity'. I don't know what it is about that song but it gets me everytime.

I have been listening to the CD for the last 6 months and still I can't take it out of my CD player. I want to know who Lynden (or his fans) is listening to right now.

Lynden David Hall (7 May 1974 - 14 February 2006) was a singer, songwriter, arranger, and producer. Born in Wandsworth, South London, he won the 'best newcomer' accolade at the 1998 MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards.
In 1999, he was the first UK performer ever voted "Best Male Artist" by the readers of Britain's Blues & Soul magazine. His debut album, Medicine For My Pain, plus the singles Do I Qualify and Sexy Cinderella, had an instant appeal to soul fans in the UK and elsewhere, but it wasn't until his work got the remix treatment that he got his major breakthrough. Hall appeared in the hit film Love Actually in 2003, where he sang at the wedding of the characters played by Keira Knightley and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Two years later, he released his third studio album In Between Jobs on the independent label Random Records. In 2004, Hall was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He passed away on St. Valentine's Day, 2006, after having lost his battle with the disease at the age of 31.

I bought this CD while living in England in 1999. I found it the other day and have been playing it endlessly,, I just did a Google search on him because it sounds like him singing in Chico DeBarge's song "Oh No" ... Imagine my shock and grief when I learned he passed in 2006.
Great artist ... Gone to soon! |
