A good book about a fascinating family,

"The Medicis" does a good job outlining the major episodes and key family members of the well-known and super-wealthy Renaissance banking family.The book's first chapter is especially exciting -- describing the attempted assassination of Lorenzo de Medici (in a church, by priests, during the Sacrament, on Easter Sunday, no less!). The continued and varying fortunes of other family members are covered in the other chapters (Cosimo, the Popes, Catherine de Medici, etc.). The pages contain a number of color photographs and a short quiz covering main ideas is included at the end of each chapter. It would have been nice if a a family chart had been included, as it was fairly difficult to keep all the Giovannis and Pieros straight (I ended up making one myself, although several can be found online). Also, a map of Italy would have been helpful. The book is appropriate for anyone over the age of 10 or so, and adults (like me) can learn much from it as well. There is some discussion of illegitimate children, which required some vague-ish explanations to my 8-yr-old daughter, and the language level will challenge younger readers, but the book's tone is clear and straightforward. I recommend this book for homeschoolers and anyone wishing to understand more about one of the most influential families in the Renaissance. |
