3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed!
I was so excited when I read the description. My kids blew through it and then put it in the "boring" section of their bookcase! (they are 4 and 5)

Like the hidden passage behind the curtain, the meal under the cover that a helper is holding, and the detail is beautiful! If yuo spend enough time looking through this pop up book then you will find that behind curtains, under things, the ceiling, backs of things, everything! I could go onfor hours about how beautiful and detailed this book is!

5.0 out of 5 stars explore a castle -- no batteries required, February 19, 2003

This review is from: Medieval Castle (Board book)
This is a wonderful value -- a fun fold-out castle, creatively designed and waiting for a lucky child to discover its many hidden surprises. The large but lightweight book comes with a "working" drawbridge on the cover, and is tied with two blue ribbons. You can "read" the book and let each of the four segments (including throne room, dining room, exterior, armory and bedrooms) appear individually, or you can unfold the house and tie the ribbons with the book covers back-to-back so that the castle is completely accessible as a sort of diorama. Your preschooler boy or girl will have hours of low-tech fun playing with the punch-out characters: king, queen, knights on horses, a jester, a wizard, lady, lord and dragon.

There are hanging banners, a sliding front gate, balconies, connecting doors, chandeliers, chess games, closets, hidden jewels, pop-up furniture and more. There are loads of fun little surprises here -- even a hidden passage. My advice: get this even for a little child who may tear the admittedly fragile cardboard pieces. You can always tape or glue them together, or buy another castle, but you can't always find a fun setup for little ones that requires imagination more than batteries, allowing children to act out stories in an exciting play environment.

5.0 out of 5 stars 3-D castle, June 13, 2004

What a wonderful "book". This three-dimensional medieval castle was a delight to both my daughters, age 2 and 5. It is very sturdy, with amazing details. My 5 year old was delighted to find special "surprises" throughout the castle. It is perfect for travel and packs so easy. Please note that this is not a book per se, but more of a "dollhouse". There are cut-out dragons, princes, princesses and other fun accessories. My daughters will play for hours with this castle.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surpassed My Expectations, April 2, 2007
This review is from: Medieval Castle: A Three-Dimensional (Hardcover)
I have to admit I was doubtful about this "book" when I first took it out of the box. However, the kids had just studied medieval castles in History and they were very excited when we opened the book, tied it back, and out in the middle of the floor was a castle for them to play with and explore. In this case, familiarity did not breed contempt, but aided in my kids enthusiasm about it. I was impressed with how many days they pulled it out to play with it again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Quality Example of the Craft of Books That Pop!, August 22, 2010
This review is from: Medieval Castle: A Three-Dimensional (Hardcover)
Everyone loves pop-up books and everyone loves castles. (Or at least I do.)

This pop-up book, part of the Carousel line by HarperCollins from 1997, is absolutely delightful. The level of detail here is satisfying. There's castle exterior and 6 rooms: an entryway, a two-story throne room, two bed chambers, an armory, and a dining room. Lots of furnishings, wall decorations, light fixtures, doors that open -- and when you pull down the drawbridge two people on horseback crossing it are revealed! Additionally, there are punch-out characters. This is more satisfying than the plastic castle that I thought was pretty cool when I was a kid.

When fully opened, the front and back covers meet, and are tied together creating a 360 degree diorama.

And this isn't one of those pop-up books that will be quickly trashed. The cardboard is quality and the engineering of the pop-ups is intelligent and surprisingly sturdy.

I love this thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very cute but not for younger kids, October 28, 2009

I got the Medieval Castle book for my almost-5-yr-old son and he LOVES the fire-breathing dragon and the working "iron" gate! The details are really incredible and there are plenty of little doors to open and hidden things to explore. It is great as a quiet activity plus there's no mess; when he's finished playing, it just folds up and stashes away until next time.

This is a product that requires a little adult supervision for the younger crowd. Even though the "paper dolls" are made of a thicker stock paper, they do still bend easily and a child of his age is prone to being a little too rough with them.

I added a customer image -- when unfolded, the two-story castle stands about 18" tall from the top of the turrets to the floor.

My only complaint is that I'm having a hard time getting it to flatten out. The creases in the floor and turrets remain bent even when the book is folded completely out and tied nice and tight. I'm subtracting one star since this means the figures won't stand in the castle without falling down. Bummer!

I got our almost-7-yr-old daughter the Victorian House book in the same series. She loves it as well and is much more gentle with it.

Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and would recommend it for children ages 6 and up.

I knew I was ordering a used book, but I was very well pleased with it when it arrived. It came exactly as advertised, and I will look forward to my next buy with this seller.

My son checked this book out at the library and had a blast "playing" with it. He loved it so much I bought one on Amazon for him to have anytime he wants to play with it.

I purchased this a few years ago for another granddaughter. A younger granddaughter from a different family requested this for Christmas this year. She had admired it and played with it. I also got the Victorian doll house which I have purchased for four granddaughters! They are treasures to them. Great for someone with a small space that wants to have a dollhouse. The castle is filled with all sorts of places to explore also.
