Not a book for the squeamish. It's purpose was to combine the work of 12th through 17th century authors into one work which depicts the atrocities that were committed over the years. The illustrations are black-and-white drawings taken from both written descriptions and woodcuts from the 12th through the 16th centuries, with some of the original woodcuts included.

Cy Stapleton is a featured columnist in several national and regional graphic arts publications and for some 20 years he operated an educational 15th century style print shop and type foundry at two renaissance theme festivals. He has compiled, written, and published over 30 titles which were sold exclusively at the renaissance festivals. He has also written a number of how-to books and profit center tutorials directed primiarly to the small to medium size printing/graphics arts shop and the entrepreneur. I can't believed I paid so much for this book. I could have draw the pictures from the wood cuts. There was an obvious lack of information as well as the dating of the tortures. It read at a middle school level. If I didn't have to pay for the postage I would send it back. I learned nothing new by reading this. I'd stick to my own research if I were you. If it had been a book of the original woodcuts with approximate dates it would have been much more helpful. One woodcut, page 11 is said to be from the 11th century yet the people are wearing 17th century clothes and there is a spelling error on page 21. The price for this book should be about $4.00 instead of $14.95. Please just spend an hour in a good library and you would learn more.

A wonderful book about gruesome atrocities from the dark ages. The pictures depicting the tortures were especially good. I read it and absorbed it and I don't think that Anton from human resources will be quite so high and mighty with me in future.

I believe this book accurately (although graphically) displays what torture was like during the Medieval period. I personally have used this book in one of my school papars, so thanks to the author of this fine book.
