Excellent obscure recording, January 15, 2006
This review is from: Medieval Songs & Dances (Audio CD)
As a performer of medieval music, this rough little gem of a recording is one of my inspirations and important influences.
I have this on audio tape from 1985. This is a fine, solid contribution to the field of historical informed performance. One of the issues tackled by Sothcott was appropriate vocal style, as such it's somewhat an experimental work -- as all attempts at authenticity in medieval music are. He's elected for a vocal style which is a bit more nasal and harsh, deliberately "unschooled" sounding, than is typical in more recent approaches, but it has a reasonably attractive result. It sounds a touch more "ethnic" than "angelic". Listeners ariving here via Anonymous 4 may be scandalized; those at home with Wulgemut -- and maybe even Sequentia -- will be right at home.
The instrumental playing deserves special call-out for quality. The playing has a distinct *edge*, even where quiet, a 'tude, a flair and energy which lends a great vitality to the whole album. The music is played with great conviction; since many of the instrumental tracks are, in fact, dances this serves well to bring out an important dimension to the characters of the pieces.
In particular, special mention is merited by their rendition of "Tre Fontaine". One of the monstrous istampittas from famed mss Brit. Ad. 29987, it's a hard work to render in a compelling -- not merely pretty -- way, due to its sheer length and structure. But here they succeed. The track positively *seethes* with tightly coiled tension, which serves as a mainspring to drive it right along.
The tracks vary attractively in texture, tempo, style, mood and instrumentation. The songs -- there are both male and female soloists -- are all instrumentally accompanied, a practice which has much fallen out of favor since Page's "English A Capella Heresy", but which remains a striking approach.

Beautifully Done, January 8, 2002
This review is from: Medieval Songs & Dances (Audio CD)
This CD is for those who want something different from any other music. The songs are relaxing and inspirational. Though none of the songs(those with words) are not in english I find this makes the songs even better. My favorite song on the whole CD is #2: Quant voi en la fin d'este
