Bad Product - Error Made by Activision,
By Adam Jones "Adam Jones" (Texas, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Medieval: Total War Gold Edition (DVD-ROM)
Activision and SEGA, who created the Gold Edition made a major error with this product. When downloading the 2.01 patch to play Multiplayer, the game does not recognize the Gold Edition as a Medieval Total War or Viking Invasion game (since this is a 3-CD set) and will not install. An unofficial patch has been created, but you will never be able to play Multiplayer with this "Gold Edition". I mailed SEGA/Activision with a complaint about this failed product and their failure to fix the error, and I was supplied with another copy, which was the Medieval Total War: Battle Collection" copy. I do not advise purchasing this error-ridden product.

Complicated at first, but great overall,

When I bought this, I was expecting a respectively hard and involved game. I got what I wanted in full. This is not a game friendly to casual gamers or ones who like uncomplicated games, you can't just pick it up and learn it within minutes, but I don't consider this a fault personally. It is very rewarding once you find out where everything is and know how to use it when. I would venture a guess that I haven't done nearly half of that this offers, and I already think I got more than my money's worth. Everything from a great campaign, to historical battles to custom ones too, it's got everything I wanted and more.
Just an aside, but no, I wasn't paid to write this, I just know what I like. For a game that's going on 7 years old, it is incredibly fun.

Is this the best ever?,

I dunno, but it would run 2nd by a short half-head!
Following on from the hugely successful Shogun: Total War (probably the best game ever, by a short half-head) comes this - Medieval: Total War. It keeps the good things from the first edition (Shogun), but doesn't get bogged down in the endless & tedious moving of characters across the strategy board (introduced with Rome, and the follow-up to this game, the aptly titled 'Medieval 2: Total War'), which is where you spend most of your time anyway. As someone with some knowledge & interest in Medieval history, it's brilliant at allowing you the opportunity to rewrite history. Worried about the Turkish expansion into the Mediterranean? Fine: send dozens of Priests and Bishops in there to convert them all. And if that doesn't work, raise a Crusade and kill them! Problem solved. But seriously, the combination of having to manage resources on a massive scale, plus the occasional running of a battle in real time is a clear winner, both financially for the developers and entertaining for their customers. If you have an interest in history, or simply want to re-write it to suit yourself, get this game. 10 years on, it's still terrific. Being that age means it will run on most modern laptops without any dramas as well, which is a bonus. Bottom line: If you don't like this game, you're either mad or boring.
