A tour de force of literary history,
By RobConway (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Medievalism: The Middle Ages in Modern England (Hardcover)
This insightful volume throws new light on the literary aspects of a problem that has most commonly been examined in terms of the visual arts (the Gothic revival in architecture, above all). I would have liked to read something more on political theory, including the idea of the "Gothic balance," explored many years ago by Samuel Kliger. This yielded the notion of Saxonism, which was even influential in the American Founding. It would have been helpful to have something on music, including Elgar and Britten. All in all, though, this is a scintillating read.
