Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Psychologist Lawrence LeShan is a pioneering expert in mind/body health and in making meditation techniques accessible to the general public. Now he has created a simple but powerful meditation program that'can make the crucial difference in losing weight--and maintaining new, healthier habits. The program can be individualized to fit personal needs in each of four areas: gaining a general sense of control; dealing specifically with hunger and food issues; handling stressful times and emergencies; and finding ways to get more joy and zest out of life. Many realistic case histories show how the exercises can work in as little as thirty minutes a day, even for people who thought they couldn't learn to meditate. Of course meditation alone will not bring about weight loss, but following Lawrence LeShan's program will maximize the ability to stick to a personal diet and exercise plan. And along with weight loss and increased self-esteem will come the possibility of maintaining a more fulfilling and pleasurable life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Practical Approach to Weight Loss, July 27, 2001
This review is from: Meditating to Attain a Healthy Body Weight (Paperback)
Although I've only recently read this book, I've used some of these same meditation techniques in the past in order to drop a few pounds, and they work. You should keep in mind that this is not a typical diet book, and the exercises that LeShan presents are not necessarily easy. His approach is designed to get inside the inner workings of your mind, to face your demons. The idea is that learning to control your mind leads to better control of your body and your habits. In this age of fad diets, LeShan's book is a practical approach for anyone who wants to shed some weight and live a heathier life.

The book's final chapter, "The Meaning of Wholistic Health," is especially engaging. LeShan presents an enlightening and informative discussion of "the medicalization of American society," where "the hospital is displacing the church or the parliament as the archetypical institution of Western society." His points are too numerous to summarize here, but his overall intention is to make us more aware of our own healing capacities and less dependent on the so-called experts.
