I was a little shocked to find out that my $25 inflatable zafu consisted of a cloth covering with, quite literally, an inflatable beach ball inside. You know, the kind with the blue, white, yellow and red panels that you played with as a kid? Yeah, it's that.

I don't know quite where I stand on this. First of all, did I get ripped off? Is this going to last? I'm a 235 pound meditator and I'm wondering when this thing is going to explode on me. I think if I'm careful and don't plop myself down on it, I just may get some pretty good mileage out of this. Here's the upside: if the "inner ball" pops for whatever reason, you don't need to send away for some fancy-shmancy replacement. You can just head to your nearest Target or even a grocery store!

I should also note that I bought this on the recommendation of Thomas Kirchner because he said it would better distribute weight and eliminate pressure points. He was absolutely correct here. The only down side (other than the quality issue) is that it's just a little wobbly. That will take a little getting used to.

I'll give this one 4 stars for now. I'll update this review after a few weeks if the wobble is too much for me or if the thing explodes. It is now the 28th of March, 2009. If you don't see a further update, things have worked out well for me and my new zafu.

---Update July 20th, 2009---

I've traveled a bit with this zafu and can say a little more on it. First of all, it makes for some great, instant lumbar support on an air plane! That really saved my back, so I feel a lot better about this product now.

The wobble I found to be negligible, as long as you have support for your knees. If your knees are not supported, you'll wobble a bit.

It's a zafu cover with a beach ball inside of it. It takes a few minutes to blow it up, then sit. It's nothing fancy, but it beats dragging around a cloth bag full of buckwheat hulls or batting in your suitcase. It is a bit wobbly in comparison to a regular zafu, and offers a slightly smaller sitting surface than the one I use at home. But it's not distracting, and it's the best option I've found that will fit in a carry-on. Take it for what it is, and it works fine.
