5.0 out of 5 stars A meditation book that speaks my language!, March 19, 2002
By
This review is from: Meditation a Foundation Course: A Book of Ten Lessons (Paperback)
What I really liked about this book is that is written in such practical, down to earth language. i have spent years getting into meditation through eastern practices, after reading this I have suddenly gone so much deeper! It's definitely because Barry is a westerner and speaks from the experience of living in this culture. the book's exercises are clearly written and really work in the way they are meant to, ie clearing the unnecessary clutter in the mind and dropping through to the stillness beyond it that is always there. I've never read a better book on meditation, and I've read a lot of them! Anyone who meditates or would like to should read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really effective introduction to meditation, December 3, 1998
By
This review is from: Meditation a Foundation Course: A Book of Ten Lessons (Paperback)
Having never tried meditation, I found the book very accessible and commendably lacking in mysticism. I'd recommend it to anyone who's looking for a new perspective, but thought meditation was too way out there to offer one.

This book is so simple and so powerful.

Full of exercises to help you to remember to observe yourself.

Don't be a mindless zombie. Pay attention.

Observe yourself:

Physically (breathing scanning the body),

Emotionally (impressions assumptions excuses justifications reactions judgements),

In stillness,

In simple movement (walking eating talking thinking),

Doing what you enjoy and that at which you are good (efficient effortless thoughtless alert responsive)

An excellent primer on meditation. Dispenses with the religious trappings that may turn away many readers. Quite profound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meditation a Foundation Course: A Book of Ten Lessons, November 8, 2005
This review is from: Meditation a Foundation Course: A Book of Ten Lessons (Paperback)
A Barry Long reader, listener, and viewer for well over a decade now, this is the book I have suggested people start with and have also given away the most. It's an excellent introduction to the teaching, practical and user-friendly. Just working with each brief lesson a day over ten days and repeating the cycle over and over until the "tools" are integrated is transformational. And if only a few of the lessons speak to you, then work with those. It's the same with all of his teaching. You come back later and more speaks to you. Sometimes it's as if you've never even heard it before. And as "meditation" has become a loaded word with all of its Eastern implications, and not to put that down, the would-be reader needs to know that this is a meditation book for Westerners, addressing the particular needs of stilling an incessant mind that feeds emotions which creates all of our problems. I write with much gratitude.

Meditation books are often riddled with wordy simple-minded mush. They are the froofy coffee-like drinks. Half-caf low-fat latte carmelito. This book is just the opposite - very clear, very concise. The book is easy to read, yet profoundly insightful. I recommend the book to anyone who is seeking to understand their mind without wading through a bunch of silly new-age dreaminess.
