This review is from: Meditation (Audio CD)
Joe Pass is admittedly outside my normal preference in music, I'm more of a blues rock kind of guy. I discovered Joe Pass though a jazz guitarist friend of mine and I always like to think I have an open mind or other styles of music. So, needless to say, "Meditation" is my first introduction into the career of a great jazzman. This is a great collection that features Joe doing what he did best, playing alone with his big hollowbody electric guitar.
The premise is simple, with smooth mellowed texture, yet with Joe, it's never dull. He was obviously wonderfully talented, among a short list of great jazz guitarists. According to the notes on this particular disc, Joe hated to travel with an amplifier, insisting on plugging straight into the venue's pa system. I'm mot sure what other pieces of work are offered in the Joe Pass collection, but I enjoy "Meditation." Although I may not buy another one of his records, I would enjoy a dvd or video of one of his performances. |
