5.0 out of 5 stars Early Hope, January 28, 2009
This review is from: Meditations (Audio CD)
This 1955 recording by Elmo Hope should serve as a great introduction to this great pianist's playing. Joining Hope are bassist John Ore and drummer Willie Jones. Hope really turns in a swinging session. Like many pianists around this time, you can hear traces of Bud Powell in his lines, but I want to make something very clear Hope was always his own man as was other Powell-influenced pianists Barry Harris, Tommy Flanagan, and Hampton Hawes. I think something that really set Hope apart later on was his composing, especially for a larger format like quintet or sextet. To hear some of his great composing and arranging check out his album "Homecoming."

Anyone into 1950s jazz piano trios should not hesitate to pick up this recording.
