A former actor and playwright, Unity Church minister Townley explores the significance of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount as a powerful tool for spiritual awakening. He considers some of its troublesome aspects in terms of the Hebrew peoples' tendency to receive spiritual wisdom as law. We hear in the beatitudes an echo of the ten commandments: "Blessed are theyfor they shall" can be misconstrued as karmic laws of cause and effect, but Townley points out how these phrases suggest the external appearance of interior states that can't be fully understood by ordinary consciousness but from a spiritual point of view. This is an insightful, nondenominational approach to an often-quoted and enigmatic biblical passage.
