... purse/pocket-sized... give a needed spiritual dimension to church jobs that can easily become very task-rather than ministry-oriented. -- Anglican Journal, March 17, 2000

Every Episcopal church should stock and dispense these. -- The Living Church, June 4, 1999

From the Back Cover

Meditations for Vestry Members, part of the Faithful Servant Series, explores the joys and challenges of vestry service. The meditations look at the call to service, discernment about ways of operating and interacting with others, and how to perform the tasks of the vestry in a way that reflects the glory of God.

The Faithful Servant Series was created to meet the needs of pastors and church staff seeking gifts to give to church members such as LEMs, Lay Ministers, choir and vestry members and others. Each volume in this series offers support, guidance and education geared specifically to one particular group or ministry within the church. The individual meditations are based on quotations from the Bible, the Book of Common Prayer, or hymns from the 1982 Hymnal, and prayers specific to the needs of each audience close each book. Designed with the church budget in mind, these affordable books acknowledge important passages and ministries in the life of the people of God.

Colleen McMahon is a judge in the New York State Court System and is active in her parish and diocese. She writes regularly for the Episcopal New Yorker and served on the Vestry at her home parish, Christ Church.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed!, March 29, 2000
This review is from: Meditations for Vestry Members (Faithful Servant Series) (Paperback)
As a newly elected vestry member of my church, I was looking for something to make the experience a bit more meaningful. I happened upon this book and ordered it. I found it wonderful, tapping into the spirituality of service to the Church. I used it as a sort of guide to a program a presented at our vestry retreat on why I felt called to this service. I would fully recommend it to anyone serving on a vestry (either for 1 day or 20 years) or considering service on a vestry. God has plans for each of us and it is up to us to discover what these plans are - this book has helped me start that journey.

This review is from: Meditations for Vestry Members (Faithful Servant Series) (Paperback)
It wasn't exactly what I expected. "Meditations" suggested there were perhaps prayers or great insights. It's a collection of the author's personal experiences and tid-bits of her idea of what makes a good Vestry member in the Episcopal Church. It's not clear why the author thinks she's qualified to make suggestions on how to succeed on the Vestry. She apparently quit her local parish Vestry when things got too controversial. She's the Sarah Palin of the Episcopal Vestry. Quit and then write a book.
