5.0 out of 5 stars very peaceful and soothing, May 6, 2010

This review is from: Meditative Guitar (MP3 Download)
This album is useful for (1) focusing on work and (2) de-stressing from everyday anxieties. This album has been able to soothe me at key moments. I listened to the album on Magnatune and then had to purchase it because I enjoyed it so much. I would whole-heartedly recommend it. I think the first reviewer's idea to give this album as a gift is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Acceptance and The Persistence of Hope, February 23, 2009
By
This review is from: Meditative Guitar (Audio CD)
For several years I have enjoyed the music available at [...], including two albums by acoustic guitarist Jeff Wahl. About a year ago, however, I saw that a third Jeff Wahl album had been added -- "Meditative Guitar." It is one of those albums that I play in repeat mode just as I have for more than 20 years on Will Ackerman albums and Michael Hedges's album, "Aerial Boundaries" or Bill Frisell's "Good Dog, Happy Man."

"Meditative Guitar" is more of a concept album than Jeff's others, in my opinion. I'm not saying that the individual tracks on this album are better than what's on Jeff's other albums. The album -- as a whole -- is simply and perfectly titled as "Meditative Guitar." This album is therapeutic. I have evidence.

Last year I taught a self-contained special education classroom for boys in the age range of 13-18. Most of the students have ADD or ADHD. Several of them have mental disorders. The boys with the greatest attention deficits and emotional disturbance liked "Meditative Guitar" the most. They wrote Jeff's name and the album title to see if their families would buy it for them...or at least listen to the album via the magnatune website. In the classroom they repeatedly requested to listen to the album, especially when they had longer assignments to complete, which would benefit from being able to sustain attention and work at a steady pace (which is not easy for these boys).

Jeff learned about the therapeutic effect this album had on these boys and sent me copies of this album plus some of his other albums. My wife, who is a licensed clinical social worker and provides group mental health counseling to a geriatric population immediately snatched a copy of each album to take to work the very next day. Several of her patients have anxiety disorders that not only "handicap" the individual but can disturb the progress of group counseling. When one or two persons exhibit a high level of anxiety, it can make others anxious also. "Meditative Guitar" is a safe sedative for these people.

My last example is the most personal. The very first day that Jeff's package of CDs arrived in the mail, I played them in the CD carousel. That night my energetic 4 year old daughter requested that "Meditative Guitar" be played in her room to help her relax. A few days later we took a trip out of town. At bedtime she look around the room and asked, "Daddy, where's the guitar music that helps me relax?" Unfortunately, we forgot to take the album with us. Once we returned home, though, she was glad to have it again at bedtime.

I didn't feel a need to describe the music, because you can listen to samples above or listen to the entire album at magnatune. However, after the wonderful, therapeutic effect it has had on several groups in different settings, I thought it appropriate for me to come here and provide testimony. This is an album to enjoy yourself, and you should certainly consider sharing it with others, possibly purchasing multiple copies to give as gifts.
