Although this CD is not true Tibetan chanting, it is one of the most beautiful peices of meditational music I have ever heard. The first track is a wonderful expression of "Om Mani Padme Hum" which I find quite soothing and uplifting. The second track, "Mantra of Avalokiteshvara" is joyous and moving. I am very glad I bought this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mantras in Chinese of Tibetan Dieties, December 13, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Tibetan Incantations (Audio CD)
O.K. so it is not in "Tibetan." However, most Tibetans will tell you the truth. That the Mantra of Avalokitshevara is the Heart Daharini. The inner mantra of Chenrezig aka Avalokitshevara. So this is extremely important for a true buddhist who really wants to practice and learn more. My teacher has us chant this during our month long summer retreat. It is truley a spiritual experience to chant with the beautiful chinese melody. I leave it on at all times to play in the backround. It actually is a healing inner chant of Chenrezig. So if you want to grow, try it. If you can't listen to something other than traditional tibetan monks chanting, then this is probably not the CD for you.

I have searched for three months for this CD. It has sold out everywhere else I have looked. This is truly a priceless item.

The disc is redeemed, in part, by the second track, a splendid rendition of the short Chenresig Dharani -- rarely found on any recording. The other two cuts are renditions of the most popular Tibetan-Sanskrit mantra: the Chenresig mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum." Although not authentically Tibetan, this disc may be useful for beginning meditators. It is soothing enough to be useful in samatha, or "calm-abiding" meditation.

1.0 out of 5 stars If you want to hear some good chanting, DON'T buy ths!, February 24, 2000

First of all, this CD is recorded by Chinese artists, NOT Tibetans. But my main complaint is that this recording is so saccarine sounding. If you want a wonderful (if non-traditional) record, try Refuge, by Gabrielle Roth and the Mirrors. For a more traditional recording, try Chod, by Chogyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche, or The Lama's Chant, by Lama Gyurme & Jean-Phillippe Rykiel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent music!!!!!, August 17, 1999

This CD has the best Tibetan chanting I have heard. This first track in my opinion is a cross between Tibetan chanting and Irish folk music because one of the musical instruments is a celtic flute. It is Flawless!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice rendition of Buddhist chants, December 13, 2004
This review is from: Tibetan Incantations (Audio CD)
I am a Tibetan refugee living in Kathmandu and i agree with Ian Oliver that the streets of Kathmandu, especially the Boudha stupa is humming with this music. After days of listening to the music while on my "koras" around the stupa , i finally bought a copy and i tell you its great. Get one, though it is in Chinese the first and the last tracks can't go wrong. Even my Hindu friends are hooked onto the tracks and are showing genuine interest in Tibetan Buddhism. That's all from Kathmandu.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hypnotic and serene, May 12, 2002
This review is from: Tibetan Incantations (Audio CD)
This is a beautiful CD and I recommend it for those who are Buddhist practioners, anyone with an interest in chanting the "Om Mani Padme Hum" mantra, or anyone who wants something soothing to play in the background. I promise though that no matter who you are, it's hard not to sing along eventually. The songs are long and repitious but here, that is a very good thing.
I have read the other reviews and just want to add this. No, it's not Tibetan, in terms of style or singing, but the mantras are revered by Tibetans. Just don't go into this expecting monks chanting in the muti-tone deep manner. These are songs beautifully done, sung by a chorus of singers and that which is sung is beautiful in itself. While in Dharamsala, India for three weeks, I could not go a day without hearing one of these songs played in the streets. Check it out.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed, November 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Tibetan Incantations (Audio CD)
If you want traditional Tibetan music this is not the record. Unfortunately, when you buy the CD there is no indication something is amiss unless you read the tiny pin-size credits on the back that mention Taiwan. And the Chinese names of the performers is a give-away, but you cannot read them until you open the CD - by then, too late to return it. If you like Chinese popular music this is the CD for you.

This review is from: Tibetan Incantations (Audio CD)
I bought this CD at Omega Institute in May and listened to it almost continuously until I went to Kathmandu, Nepal in June. On the other side of the globe this CD was playing at Nepalese and Tibetan gift shops in Nepal and Tibet! I was at home away from home. Music is the universal language.
