Quick Summary: Lively writing; engaging introduction to the principles of traditional-ish Greek/Southern Italian/Moroccan/Middle Eastern-ish living and cooking; no-more-than moderately difficult and time-consuming recipes with mostly easily-obtained ingredients; good variety of recipes, from breakfast suggestions to side dishes, entrees, and dessert; resulting dishes turn out a bit bland, but should be easy to spice up.

Caveats: I am an unsophisticated cook with no-better-than-average kitchen skills. I hate following recipes. If my wife and I both followed the same recipe, her version would look and taste 50% to 75% better than mine.

Comments: So far, I've made five dishes from this cookbook: Chicken in Paprika Sauce, Moroccan Couscous, Pork Chops with Tomatoes and Bell Peppers, Baked Apples with Raisins and Walnuts, and Pancetta and Spinach Frittata. This is not a huge sample to judge from, I know, but the dishes do include a breakfast, a chicken entree, a pork entree, a side dish, and a dessert.

What I've found is this:

First, I made five recipes! I've been receiving "Eating Well" magazine for two years and they have plenty of attractive and healthy recipes but I haven't tried even one. In this cookbook, the dishes are appealing enough, the recipes easy enough (not EASY, but easy ENOUGH), the ingredients common enough, and the prep time brief enough to pull me in. That's marvelous.

Second, the resulting dishes taste good but not great. Except for the Chicken in Paprika Sauce, which came out on the bitter side, and the Moroccan Couscous, which has a very vibrant, fruity flavor, the dishes came out a bit bland. This is almost certainly a matter of personal taste.

Well, it's a "Dummies" series, not advanced cooking, keep that in mind. Very sound explaination outlining the health benefits of a "mediterranean" diet. Or is it just a healthy diet? Recommended to consume medium to small size portions of chicken and fish, limited red meats, lots of vegetables, less fruit. Use healthy fats like avocado, extra virgin olive oil, nuts. Limited grains. Which is a great diet in my opinion, keeps you away from chemical and sugar laden boxed foods and encourages fresh food with minimum cooking. The recipes are basic, easy to prepare and tasty. I feel if you are newer to cooking, this book will be better received than for experienced cooks who could toss some of these recipes together with no cookbook necessary.

Format: Paperback
After purchasing several other mediterranean cookbooks, I have found this book to be the best for several reasons: The taste of the food, the intent and research behind the ingredients, the ease and speed of the recipes, and the credentials of the authors. That is pretty much the litmus test for me and this and this book makes the cut. I highly recommend this for the person that is looking for a complete guide and doesn't want to spend countless hours and dollars on mediocre solutions.

The great thing about For Dummies® Cookbooks is that they aren't just a book full of great recipes, but they're also a great resource for living a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Mediterranean Diet Cookbook For Dummies® fits this bill. The book provides a great backdrop to eating well and cooking healthy meals. Chapter 1 introduces not only the Mediterranean Diet, but the lifestyle. The idea is to enjoy small portions of good food made with fresh ingredients, with a small glass of wine, and to be sure to include some fresh air and physical activity into your day also! In addition to the recipes, chapters include information about the health benefits of the diet, weight and appetite control, dealing with food cravings, the art of mindful eating, and grocery shopping and kitchen tips. Chapter 4 also dishes up some meal planning ideas for you, that take the thinking out of healthful, balanced eating! Some of the dishes are what my grandmother would have called "peasant food" because they are economical and nutritious...but also comforting and rich in flavor. The recipes include fresh ingredients and simple steps, with great results (i.e., delicious and pleasing to the eye). You won't be disappointed! Mangiare bene!

Am starting by noting something at the end of the book on page 348. Love that the authors have both US unit as well as International Metric units, which many cookbooks I recommend to Americans don't have. While the title of the book says Mediterranean Diet Cookbook it not so much a 'diet' book but simply a healthy eating book that happens to lack the heavy fats that some books have.

On page 33 there is a chapter about losing weight with the books suggestion, and again this is about a change in lifestyle, and changes that aren't really that hard once you get your head around the simplicity and then not make it harder than it really is. On page 35 the authors note that quitting diets is something you have to do to have success in losing and keeping the weight off. This is true. So I resigned myself to the idea they needed to have Diet in the title to get your attention.

Why I have the book is because I am always looking for more Mediterranean food ideas since we simply love the foods of the region. Appreciate on page 37 where the authors remind the reader to follow the Mediterranean idea of focusing on fresh fruits and vegetables, and make the vegetable area a priority. And learn to have a well stocked pantry where items are handy, so there wont be any excuse that you cannot make a quick easy meal.

Will also note that getting over the idea that a meal has to be BIG or complicated is also needed. They also note wisely that a Mediterranean food lifestyle allows for so many fruits and vegetables and vegetables are so low in calories, and in using the many recipes you can actually eat more and in eating more healthy food you actually will lose weight. The authors also have an excellent serving size guide beginning on page 39.
