Gr. 4^-7. Fieldwork is an integral part of this new entry in the real kids/real science series produced in cooperation with the Children's School of Science in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Doris introduces animals from six classes of Arthropoda, including the horseshoe crab, potato beetle, and praying mantis, then follows with an assortment of loosely structured activities (to do at the local pond, in the backyard, or in the basement) to acquaint children with those and other animals in the phylum. The photos are plentiful but often too small to use for identification, and there's probably not enough here for school reports. There are, however, intriguing facts aplenty, and the many pictures of kid-animal interaction will inspire a few children to take up backyard science. Also a handy teacher's resource for outdoor science activities.

Review
More than 200 color photos form the foundation of a guide to raising, feeding, and studying praying mantids. Photos were taken at the Children's School of Science and impart the basics of setting up and maintaining an ecosystem for anthropods. Outstanding; especially for young insect collectors who want to put together an exhibit. --
