Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Meet the Bible is a day-by-day book of biblically inspired meditations written with Gen-Xers in mind. In fact, "fresh" is a word that the authors often use to describe this innovative blend of Scripture and devotionals. While traditional devotionals often lack the substance that can be found in Scripture, daily reading Bibles are often too dense and time-consuming for the average 20-something reader. Using brief but direct excerpts from Scripture, the authors guide readers to the Bible's key passages, themes, and events, in which the youthfully and culturally sophisticated commentary by Philip Yancey and Brenda Quinn helps them understand the relevance of these ancient stories. Each day gets one to two pages of text and closes with a contemplation, such as "When you experience success, whom do you tend to credit, yourself or God?"

Review

You've finally admitted it: You've had that Bible on your bookshelfsince you were 12, and maybe you've even opened it, closed your eyes, and pointed to a verse in the hope that it would reveal something. Still, all you know about the Bible is that there's a lot in there about God and fornication and shining countenances and faith, hope, and love, which abide, these three. Philip Yancey and Brenda Quinn have just the book for you.....Most people who decide to read the Bible start at the beginning and then get bogged down somewhere in the middle of Leviticus. Yancey and Quinn offer an abridged version that preserves all the high points while eliminating genealogies and formulas for ritual....At the end of a year with Yancey and Quinn, you'll know about Hebrew parallelism, single combat warfare, and the revolutionary undercurrents in Jesus' hometown of Nazareth. More importantly, you'll have something that millions of church-going Christians never acquire-a sense of how the Bible's many authors relate to and build on one another, culminating in the life and teaching of Jesus . -- From Beliefnet

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I've been needing!, April 30, 2000

This is a fantastic book! I am a teacher and graduate student, but I could never manage to read the Bible. The significance of the passages always escaped me, the Bible seemed overwhelming and confusing, and I couldn't fathom how people could read so much into a single line. This book is exactly what I have been needing. The authors pick out a huge variety of Bible readings, and then explain their significance and context in a way that's both profound and completely understandable. I am finally able to see "the big picture." It's also removing a source of guilt from my life - one of those things that you don't realize is such a thorn in your side until it's gone. I've wanted to read the Bible for so long, but previously it just never "clicked."

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Devotional I Have Ever Seen!, February 17, 2001

One of the hardest things for Christians to do is to feel like they can tackle the entire Bible in a refreshing and disciplined manner. Yancey and Quinn have finally provided a way for that to happen. Although the readers of "Meet the Bible" will not cover every verse of Scripture, the authors to a fantastic job of making sure that the reader covers the main themes of each book of the Bible. What's even more benificial is that after each of the 365 readings, Yancey and Quinn see to it that the reader understands the historical and practical issues of significance of the passages have just read. If you have desired a devotional that will help you undersatand scripture in its entirety as well as answering the all-important "what does it have to do with me?" this is by far the best tool I have ever seen to give your relationship with God the boost it so often needs. As a Pastor, I highly suggest you buy it. It'll be the best [money] you ever spent!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great summary of the bible, September 13, 2001
By

This review is from: Meet the Bible (Hardcover)
If you tried to read the bible (like me) and couldn't (like me) because it doesn't make sense and you don't know what you're reading half the time then read this book. it tells the entire story of the bible in a language that you and I can understand. It basically summarizes everything in the bible so you only get what's important. So if you want to read the bible but don't want to READ the bible then this is the book for you. It contains 365 segments each of which is 1-3 pgs. but i just read it staight through in a couple months.
