5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I've been needing!
This is a fantastic book! I am a teacher and graduate student, but I could never manage to read the Bible. The significance of the passages always escaped me, the Bible seemed overwhelming and confusing, and I couldn't fathom how people could read so much into a single line. This book is exactly what I have been needing. The authors pick out a huge variety of Bible...

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but could be more insightful
It's good, and I like that they broke the Bible up into small chunks so that it doesn't seem so intimidating, but most of the blurbs after the reading are very basic. Like, you can logic that out for yourself basic. I think I was looking for something a little more insightful. It tends to oversimplify the Bible instead of showing all the multitude of ways that everything...

This is a fantastic book! I am a teacher and graduate student, but I could never manage to read the Bible. The significance of the passages always escaped me, the Bible seemed overwhelming and confusing, and I couldn't fathom how people could read so much into a single line. This book is exactly what I have been needing. The authors pick out a huge variety of Bible readings, and then explain their significance and context in a way that's both profound and completely understandable. I am finally able to see "the big picture." It's also removing a source of guilt from my life - one of those things that you don't realize is such a thorn in your side until it's gone. I've wanted to read the Bible for so long, but previously it just never "clicked."

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Devotional I Have Ever Seen!, February 17, 2001

One of the hardest things for Christians to do is to feel like they can tackle the entire Bible in a refreshing and disciplined manner. Yancey and Quinn have finally provided a way for that to happen. Although the readers of "Meet the Bible" will not cover every verse of Scripture, the authors to a fantastic job of making sure that the reader covers the main themes of each book of the Bible. What's even more benificial is that after each of the 365 readings, Yancey and Quinn see to it that the reader understands the historical and practical issues of significance of the passages have just read. If you have desired a devotional that will help you undersatand scripture in its entirety as well as answering the all-important "what does it have to do with me?" this is by far the best tool I have ever seen to give your relationship with God the boost it so often needs. As a Pastor, I highly suggest you buy it. It'll be the best [money] you ever spent!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great summary of the bible, September 13, 2001

If you tried to read the bible (like me) and couldn't (like me) because it doesn't make sense and you don't know what you're reading half the time then read this book. it tells the entire story of the bible in a language that you and I can understand. It basically summarizes everything in the bible so you only get what's important. So if you want to read the bible but don't want to READ the bible then this is the book for you. It contains 365 segments each of which is 1-3 pgs. but i just read it staight through in a couple months.

4.0 out of 5 stars A reworking and expansion of a leaner book, June 19, 2001

If you can find the earlier Philip Yancey book, A Guided Tour of the Bible, get it. It includes six months of daily readings. This newer book simply takes that slim-but-elegant volume and interweaves six more months of readings from Brenda Quinn. It reaches serviceable result, but the briefer introduction sufficed.

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely wonderful . . ., September 17, 2000
This review is from: Meet the Bible (Hardcover)
This book is absolutely wonderful. It really helps you reflect on your relationship with God, on your character (flaws included), and your walk as a Christian. I have gotten so much out of this book in only the first month of using it as a devotional. I strongly recommend having an accountability partner whom you would exchange your responses with--make sure it is someone you really trust. The whole exercise helps you become honest with yourself about who you really are. I love it!

I bought this book as a NY resolution and LOVE it. My husband and I read from it before we go to bed and on long road trips stemming deep conversations. We feel exhilarated, educated, and much more. Regardless of personal beliefs, this book explains the Bible in our generation's terms, meaning a churchless many (including myself). This book makes it fun and easy to learn about the Bible.

This wonderful book of inspiration, reflection, and key scripture from each book of the Bible; Genesis to Revelation, has been comforting to me. From beginning to end this marvelous book is enlightening and exciting reading. The gifted authors have produced a much needed companion to the Bible.

Each book of the Bible becomes crystal clear. I also recommend Walking The Bible (yes literally walking thru the Bible lands) by Bruce Feiler.

Meet The Bible is a devotional book, yet it is immediately so instructive you will, as I did during a recent illness, just keep reading thru to the finish. I am buying several to share with family and friends. What a masterpiece, in my opinion.

I read the paperback edition, wished it were a leatherbound edition, and appreciated every one of the 686 pages, however, the last few books of the New Testament were shorter, especially Revelation, almost as if the writers were hurrying along. I wanted to read and learn more! There is nothing dull about the Bible now; after you read this book, or read it along with a book of the Bible, you will obtain a completely different perspective as you contemplate the "whole picture"!

I loved every moment reading this book and gaining knowledge of human nature as pictured in the book of books, the Holy Bible.
