Format: Hardcover
Meet Christopher: An Osage Indian Boy from Oklahoma is a biography of an Osage boy in contemporary America. The photographs depict Christopher as a lower middle class boy who loves his family and wants to keep his Osage heritage alive through traditional dance and learning the Osage language. It is clear that Christopher loves his Osage heritage and is proud of it. This book uses Osage names and allows the reader to pronounce them correctly which is another important aspect in understanding any culture. This book addresses the stereotypes that all Native Americans live on reservations and they always dress in traditional clothes by showing pictures of Christopher and his family in contemporary clothes and in a home outside of the reservation. Christopher and the author, Genevieve Simermeyer, weave together the present life of Christopher with the history of the Osage people using maps and old photographs. Christopher's family is Christian which may have caused bias in this book. The author maintains that not all Native Americans were forced to convert to Christianity. Meet Christopher is a book that allows the reader to see who Native American's are today and how they live. It also allows other Native American readers to identify with Christopher and his family.
