When Warner Music bought Finlandia, once Finland's major label for recording of the country's contemporary repertoire, they wasted little time in letting its enormous catalogue fall out of print. But before they did Finlandia in, they at least collected pieces by various famous Finnish composers onto two-CD sets titled "Meet the Composer". Few of these are available in the United States, but I'm happy to find this installment dedicated to Magnus Lindberg here. As many pieces are performed here by Lindberg's closest collaborators not long after they were written, this set is an important document for fans of the composer.

Most of the pieces written here are from the 1980s, and they represent a Lindberg different from the one enjoying popular acclaim. Lindberg's mature period, when he has written pieces marked by rich harmonies that develop through a chacconne structure, is attested by only two pieces here. One is "Twine" for solo piano (1988), actually the first piece in this style. Lindberg is a pianist himself (though Tuija Hakkila performs here), and "Twine" examines his chaccone subject with a wide variety of techniques. "Kinetics" for large orchestra (1988-89) was his first large ensemble work, and introduces his interest in multiple layers of harmony, in which the softer "background" harmonies contains chords founded on the notes missing from the "foreground". This is one of my favourite pieces by Lindberg, an unstoppable beast that packs a whole world of colour and detail into 10 minutes of frenetic development. However, I prefer the recording an Ondine disc which has better sound quality.
