5.0 out of 5 stars The continuing evolution of "Joe Mac", January 6, 2002
This review is from: Meet Joe Mac (Audio CD)
"Meet Joe Mac" is an excellent showcase for the talents of Joey McIntyre. The CD is an ear-pleasing mix of slower pop ballads and fast-tempo tunes. McIntyre's voice sounds great: his boyish sweetness is at times touched with an increased maturity. He co-wrote all but one of the songs on this CD.

The songs are mainly about love and romance. The best of them have lyrics that hold up to repeated listening, and may even strike an emotional chord in you if you listen carefully.

The CD gets off to a good start with the cool, energetic "We Don't Want to Come Down." Then he shifts gears into the melancholy, beautiful "Rain." "Walkin' My Baby Back Home" has a sweet, tender sound, and "NYC Girls" has a playful rap interlude. Joey also sounds like he's having fun on the satiric spoken-word portion of "If I Run into You," which is about bumping into an ex-lover.

I was very impressed by three other songs in particular. "Easier" is a lovely ballad performed with passion. It is a nice complement to "National Anthem of Love," an ebullient, fun song on which Joey is not afraid to be a little silly. The CD ends on a sweet and upbeat note with "I Don't Know Why I Love You," an excellent, fast-tempo love song with great lyrics.

"Meet Joe Mac" is a great CD that is on the whole devoid of "filler"; every song is enjoyable and adds an element to the disc as a whole. Good job, Joe Mac!

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this CD immediately!!, July 4, 2001
This review is from: Meet Joe Mac (Audio CD)
I could not disagree more with Courtney Kemp's so-called "review" of this CD. Were you listening to the same one as me?? Were you listening to it at all?? I have always been a fan, but admit I was expecting some slightly overdone pop a la Stay the Same when I bought Meet Joe Mac. I could not have been more pleasantly surprised. It was like he got inside my head, figured out what my most perfect album would sound like, then wrote and recorded it. It is fantastic!!! It's fun, it's different, and like the title, gives us a wide open window into what makes Joe Mac tick. From the hilariously sarcastic "If I Run Into You," the deep "Rain," emotional "Mrs. Callahan," and my personal favorite du jour, the poetic "Love Song," this album is Joe's most honest musical endeavor to date. The vocals are by far the clearest and most powerful he has ever done, and his work with Eman Kiriakou has broadened his talent (not given him an identity crisis, Courtney...puhleeeeze). If you are ever lucky enough to see them perform these songs live together, I guarantee they will blow you away. I bought 3 copies of this album -- one for home, one for the car, and one for the office. I just can't stop listening to it. So ignore the nasty reviews, ditch all preconceived notions of former "boy band" members and relax with Meet Joe Mac. This music was meant to be touching and fun, and Joe comes through.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Pleasant Surprise, May 23, 2001
This review is from: Meet Joe Mac (Audio CD)
Seeing as I've never been a huge fan of Joey McIntyre (I'd heard some of his old singles and found them to be decent songs), I was very surprised to see that he was coming out with a new album. When I saw Mr. McIntyre debuting his new single on TV and I listened to it, I was totally amazed. As a whole, the new album "Meet Joe Mac" is actually very good. It is a grab-bag of styles....you have your ballads, your fun rock songs, your just plain fun songs, and then your risky songs. It is obvious in this album that McIntyre is trying to change his style. And he succeeds (with flying colors at some moments). Let's take it song by song: 1) We Don't Wanna Come Down- An upbeat rock song about the problems in this world and how the youth feel...overall a pretty good song (7 out of 10) 2) Rain- Not as sure what this song is about but the melody and sound are great; a rock ballad of sorts; total change in McIntyre's style (9 and 1/2 out of 10) 3) Walkin My Baby Back Home- Yes, the title makes it sound like it is an awful song, but this is one of the most surprising ballads on the album; rock tinge to it (8 out of 10) 4) NYC Girls- Joey tries to get a techno/hip hop vibe into this song and it doesn't completely work; admirable try, maybe it'll grow on ya (4 and 1/2) 5) Easier- the softest love song on the album; wonderful song about dedication in a relationship (9) 6) Walk Away- More techno sound while he tries to change it up on the album; another nice try (5) 7) National Anthem of Love- Actually, it's a nice upbeat rock song like the song number 1; this one is a lot of fun and nice to listen to, though the addition of former B52 Fred Schneider seems a poor choice (7 and 1/2) 8) If I Run Into You- Another attempt to be original and funny that doesn't work; a nice try and the song is growing on me; he seriously sounds like the lead singer from Blink182 in this song; it's kinda grown on me though (5) 9) Mrs. Callahan- the BEST song on this album; very heartfelt and meaningful to McIntyre, lovely ballad with a great final chorus about the "delicacy of a parent-child relationship"; outstanding, this is a risk that worked (10) 10) Love Song- It grows on you, a ballad with a beat, but not much else (6 and 1/2) 11) One Night- this sounds totally like the Wonders from That Thing You Do; not too bad a song, though it sounds very oldies (6) 12) I Don't Know Why I Love You- A rocker that really is a good song; very great melody and very enjoyable (8 and 1/2)

There are some risks on this album that work and some that don't. I bought this album by a singer that I've never been a fan of because I loved the new song Rain. If only for Rain, Easier, Mrs. Callahan, and Walkin My Baby Back Home, this album would be worth it, but it has several more good songs as well as some fillers. It's worth the money if you want a great pop CD. Help reward McIntyre for taking a risk, he's got a great voice and I hope he stays in this business a long time.
