Meet the Next President by Bill Sammon is a brief guide to the candidates with biographies and stands on major issues. The book covers Mitt Romney, John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Fred Thompson, Bill Richardson, and John Edwards in detail. I was a little disappointed in the coverage; this was not the book I expected. Maybe it's asking too much...

5.0 out of 5 stars Undecided Voter, December 30, 2007
This review is from: Meet the Next President (Hardcover)
I purchased this book because I love politics and wasn't sure who to vote for in 2008. The author, Bill Sammon, interviewed the candidates, read the books the candidates wrote, and examined their past voting records to collect the information for this book. I was impressed with the amount of new information I learned about all of the candidates. Bill Sammon truly gives you the positives and negatives of each candidate. I could not find a bias toward a certain party nor candidate. Before reading this book, I was contemplating between two candidates, and this book confirmed my decision on those two candidates. The only negative I see about this book is that he left some of the second-tier candidates out of the book (Ex. Ron Paul.) It would have been helpful to have background information on ALL of the candidates. Also, there is less material on some of the candidates (Bill Richardson and Mike Huckabee). The book is easy to read and understand. I truly feel that it would help anyone make a more educated decision in 2008. I hope the author writes an expanded version on the two nominees and third party candidates. I also hope he will continue writing these books for future elections. May the best man/woman win in 2008...thank you Bill Sammon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Forward Looking, December 31, 2008

Bill Sammon is one of the best political analysts in the media. When you consider the research was done prior to the primaries, it is quite impressive that he was able to give us so much information about the major candidates. This book is still relevant since many of the candidates will be coming back around in the next election.

This review is from: Meet the Next President (Hardcover)
Meet the Next President by Bill Sammon is a brief guide to the candidates with biographies and stands on major issues. The book covers Mitt Romney, John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Fred Thompson, Bill Richardson, and John Edwards in detail. I was a little disappointed in the coverage; this was not the book I expected. Maybe it's asking too much in this age where every reporter has a bias, but I was hoping for objective, thorough coverage of each candidate. I didn't really notice the bias until reading the bio of Hillary. Then I flipped to the back flap and noticed that Sammon works for FoxNews. Ok, that explains it. While I'm no fan of Hillary's, his bio seemed determined to focus on the most negative aspects of her life. Romney's flip-flopping is accentuated, as is Hillary's shrillness, Obama's unusual upbringing, and Edward's legal antics. That said, I did learn a great deal about each candidate profiled, but I feel that perhaps Sammon released his book too soon. Richardson is already out of the race, Thompson has yet to show, and "dark horse" Mike Huckabee only merits 3 pages. This book is a good start to the research needed to make the right choice in the voting booth, but it's too incomplete and biased to give the whole story.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worthless. Completely biased with half truths and lazy analysis, August 10, 2008
This review is from: Meet the Next President (Hardcover)
This has got to be one of the most poorly written, biased, partisan, works I've ever read. Look Mr. Sammon, if you're going to write a synopsis on political issues in an informative way, at least be accurate and thorough in your analysis. The Mitt Romney chapter looked promising and appeared to be non-biased. But as soon as I've read the following chapters (particularly Sen. Clinton's chapter), the right-wing biased became too clear. But that's not the worse. The lazy analysis of all of the candidates on the issues, the lack of issues, and the lack of candidtates covered made this a pitiful book.

According to the book all of the Democrats are in favor of nationalized universal health care where as all of the Republicans are against it. Question Mr. Sammon, what exactly is nationalized universal healpth care. Is it single payer health-care system proposed by Truman in 1950? Is it "Hillary-Care" universal mandate that Clinton proposed in 1993? If both classify as univerval health care, what's the difference between "Hillary-Care" and Romney's "mandatory health insurance"? Wouldn't Romney be in favor of universal health care if universal mandate is understood to be part of definition of universal health care? Another thing, Sen. Obama isn't in favor of universal health care. The only thing he's going to do is apply the "Romney-Clinton" care to minors and leave the adults' plan the way it is. As for immigration Mr. Sammon, you mention guess workers for some, but not all of the candidates. You mention amnesty for some, not all. You also border patrol for some, not all. Why variate from candidate to candidate?

Where are the issues? On taxes their is only mention of Bush's tax plan. No mention of any of the candidates' view on Fair Tax or mention of the middle class tax cuts proposed by some of the Democrats. You only mention Huckabee's record of raising taxes on the wealthy but not his advocacy of the Fair Tax Plan that would abolish the IRS. You don't mention education, trade, the economy, election reform nor direct democracy. Where are the candidates? Former Sen. Mike Gravel was the first candidate to declare his run within the Democratic party. Where's his chapter? What about Rep. Paul, Rep. Hunter, Rep. Kucinich, Sen. Dodd, Sen. Brownback and Sen. Biden? Were they not running for president at the time you wrote the book? What can I say, a direct product of the elite media.

2.0 out of 5 stars Biased, March 13, 2008

Too biased to be informative. Exaggerated, unimportant comments, as well as strange directions of thought, make this book pretty useless for the serious decision-maker.

4.0 out of 5 stars Why is it the Amazon choose to show ONLY info on the Mitt Romney chapter?, January 31, 2008

It seems entirely inappropriate that, during the current election season, Amazon would choose to share an exerpt of only the Mitt Romney chapter in any detail in its description of this book. It seems that Amazon has chosen to reveal information on one candidate and not the others. This appears to be a bias against Mitt Romney and is inappropriate at best.

1.0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment., January 9, 2008
This review is from: Meet the Next President (Hardcover)
I was really hoping for just the straight facts on the candidates' backgrounds.
That is NOT what this book is.
It is a political advertisement. It is so full of spin, opinion and backhanded character attacks that a serious reader must question where the line between biographical facts and creative writing begins and ends.

There is really no point to buying/reading this book.
If you are looking for un-editorialized facts about the candidates you WILL NOT find that here.
If you DO want all of your information "spun" and "sanitized" before you get it ... just spend the evening watching Fox News. It is the same talking points that you will find in this book but you'll get them for FREE.

It is unfortunate that I must actually GIVE this book "One Star" in order to review it. This book deserves none.
