"Sorry it was such a dull day," Wilbur Robinson apologizes to the boy narrator at the conclusion of William Joyce's Meet the Robinsons. Indeed. The two lads have just spent the day trying out Cousin Laszlo's antigravity device, sledding in the east wing of the house, listening in as Grandfather and his friends "Mr. Ellington" and "Mr. Armstrong" rehearse with a dancing frog band, and avoiding the slingshot rocks aimed by the dinosaurs that have escaped the Mesozoic era via the Time Machine that someone left on again. Ho hum.
William Joyce's remarkable imagination takes shape this time around in a story about a pleasant family who just happen to have tigers for pets, endless scientific labs, and an octopus butler. The lavish illustrations, which look to be set circa 1940s-50s, are trademark Joyce (Rolie Polie Olie): dense with color, quirky, and finely tuned in every detail.
