My 9 year old daughter and I read this short book in a few sittings and found it charming and funny. The author takes a perennial favorite story, Noah's ark, and turns it on its ear. Younger children might simply find the story fun. The two chosen penguins don't want to leave their young, irascible, yet endearing friend behind when they leave for the ark. So the two smuggle him aboard in a suitcase. The high jinx are wonderfully illustrated by [[Jörg Mühle]]. Discerning middle readers might pick up on more difficult questions, such as Why would God choose to punish even animals with the deluge? Why does the young penguin commit an evil act? Why is he forgiven? Can even God make mistakes? And there is an even subtler layer. The author has chosen to make the two penguins chosen to be saved on the ark male. Only through a careful watch of pronouns is this obvious. And when the two penguins disembark, there are indeed three of them, although through adoption/friendship not procreation, and one of them marries a dove. So whether the book is enjoyed as a witty children's story, a religious thought-provoker for middle readers, or a social commentary, I would recommend zipping through it for it's unique take on an old story.

Note: I read an uncorrected proof.

This book is delightful! My family and I saw the play performed and that too was hilarious I started reading it on the bus on my way to give it to my granddaughter and couldn't stop laughing. but on the serious side It represents being given a choice which any self righteous reader will flinch at as I noticed from some of the reviews. So sad that judgment still reigns in some religions!

I loved it! It is both a funny penguin story and quite thought provoking on a different level as labfs39 already said. I read it in German and the writing itself was witty too. 5/5 penguins!

I read this book to see if it was appropriate for our church bookstore - it is not! The author has, as another reviewer stated, turned the Biblical story of Noah and the Ark on it's ear. It's told from the viewpoint of 3 male penguins on board and an angry dove who apparently manages the ark while Noah does nothing. The off-the-original story has made God and the biblical point of this event insignificant. The dove has to tell all the creatures of the world that only two of them must get to the ark (never a mention of male and female). He forgets to bring another dove and in the end "marries" the 3rd stowaway penguin to fool Noah as they disembark. An adult or young person unfamiliar with the story will have a distorted version, and a person who understands the biblical story will be uncomfortable at best.

Why this book ever originally got published in Germany is beyond me. And then for some presumably respectable foundation to pay for its translation and US publication suggests nothing more than the involvement of nepotism or some other even more despicable form of corruption. The book has simply no redeeming feature (whether as to text or illustrations) for potential readers of any age or persuasion. The biblical Noah story is distorted and trivialized, the occasional humor is infantile, and any possible uplifting take-home message, if there is one included, is too obscure to recognize. Enough said. --- Arthur H. Westing, Putney, Vermont
