Editorial Reviews

Review

"...this book makes a significant contribution to its intended audience. It provides a framework for further investigation and discussion; one in which a family member, health care professional, or a person with MS can use as a starting point." -- Physical Therapy, Clare C. Bassile, PT, EdD, April 2002 "Meeting the Challenge of Progressive Multiple Sclerosis" lives up to the promise of its title. Dr Coyle and June Halper have created a concise, practical and useful overview of worsening MS and the dilemma faced when progression presents its challenges to patients and those who care about them. The language is straightforward and does not shy away from difficult topics yet always presents information with the reassurance of realistic hope...Both encouraging and informative, this book is a welcomed addition to the education areas of centers, resource rooms, patient libraries and professional offices. It's clarity makes it of value to the health care professional as well as the layman. The authors assert that "in facing worsening disease, people with MS must be empowered with tools for the transition...to help them adapt to change and remain functional and productive members of their families and the community" (P66). This thin book itself is such a tool." -- Dorothea Cassidy Pfohl, The Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers 2002 "Six years ago I was diagnosed with secondary-progressive MS. Imagine my delight when this book crossed my desk! With anticipation, I began reading about the diagnosis and therapies of primary- and secondary progressive MS...The language is understandable, intelligent, friendly, enlightened, and enlightening. All aspects of health issues are addressed: mental, physical, emotional, and social. Coyle and Halper even discuss pregnancy, sex, housing, adaptive equipment, filing for benefits, insurance, and taxes! At the end of the book is a list of 18 great Web sites, followed by the best index I've ever encountered. This book is a "must have" for every person with primary- and secondary-progressive MS. Treat yourself to a copy. At 19.95 dollars, it's better than chocolate." -- InsideMS Fall 2001

I was a little disappointed in this book. It is actually smaller than I expected. The section on Current Therapies for Progres- sive MS is about two pages long and basically says.....there are, currently, no treatments for progressive MS. The rest of the book deals w/ symptom management, most of which I was already familiar with (which drugs were regularly prescribed for which complaints, gimmicks that were helpful in dealing w/ incontinence, how to incorporate a bowel regimen, etc.)
In other words, I found nothing new in this book: just a lot of things to do to make us feel like all is not lost. Unfortunately, filling my day with regimens and symptom management activities is not what I call Meeting the Challenge. I think of it more as surrendering to the Drudgery. The book didn't give me cause to feel hopeful nor did it give me any new information that I could take w/ me to my next neurologist appointment. I was disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars a concise and thorough overview of PPMS, December 4, 2007
This review is from: Meeting the Challenge of Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (Paperback)
One of the things I most liked about this book was precisely that it IS short - short and to the point. It is an excellent, comprehensive overview of Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (PPMS) - for those newly diagnosed and for anyone who wants to ramp-up quickly on knowledge of and about this chronic disease. It is not a pointedly useful book for those searching for support or novel interventions. Indeed, it offers no inspiring stories or warm sentiments; no hugs in text form.

I found this book to be a quick and engaging read, with a dearth of fluff, and without verbosity. It let me know what pieces of information were relevant to PPMS that I might want to explore more deeply in separate texts. Most of all, I found the perfect text to recommend to people I personally wanted to understand the condition, that I wanted to have an accurate overview. It has served as a helpful gateway into discussions and questions, voicing of concerns on both sides. The book does all the "background work!"
