Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7-An eye-catching, informative chronicle by a marine biologist whose specialty is studying dolphins in their natural environment-the open ocean. Many of the sparkling, full-color photos were a natural outgrowth of Dudzinski's work on the IMAX film Dolphins, in which she is featured, and their sharp clarity is a pellucid window into a watery world often glimpsed only in dim mystery. The readable narrative includes biographical and career information, giving young enthusiasts a glimmer of what it takes to become a marine biologist, as well as descriptions of the author's research projects and scientific equipment. Threaded throughout is a raft of detail on dolphins-their socialization, communication, feeding behaviors, physical characteristics, and more-all accompanied by those limpid color photos. Notes on the Marine Mammal Protection Act regarding dolphins, a list of resources, and a bright two-page pictorial chart of the world's dolphins are appended (sadly, sizes are not noted). Laurence Pringle's fine Dolphin Man (Atheneum, 1995), Wayne Grover's mystical Dolphin Adventure (Greenwillow, 1990), and Don C. Reed's very personal The Dolphins and Me (Little, Brown, 1989; o.p.) are already in most collections, but libraries will still want to make room for this bright, clearly written entry.

From Booklist

Marine biologist Dudzinski provides an engaging, informative introduction to dolphin life and behavior as seen through her own experiences and scientific research. The lively, first-person narrative incorporates abundant facts and entertaining anecdotes, infused with Dudzinski's infectious enthusiasm for her subjects and her work. Beautiful, full-color photos are breathtaking and well chosen for explication, showing diverse dolphins and the complex equipment. There are also many stills from the IMAX film in which the author was featured (and which readers may clamor to see). The challenges, responsibilities, and rewards of studying dolphins are detailed and well conveyed in text and visuals, allowing children to get up close and personal with the fascinating creatures. The book includes a two-page spread portraying dolphins of the world, as well as a list of organizations. A very effective and appealing approach to the subject. Shelle Rosenfeld

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for all ages!, April 13, 2000
This review is from: Meeting Dolphins (Hardcover)
An excellent book with big, colorful pictures. Although it is recommended for ages 9-12, a 5 year old relative I read it to was intrigued and asked several educated questions while having the book read to him. The book is especially appropriate for kids (and adults!) who've seen the IMAX film it is based on. It offers some of the same photography along with a little more detail about Dr. Dudzinski's groundbreaking research. Highly recommend.
